Hey All

I'm concerned I have a cheap HRM (watch only no chest band) and I am getting a polar FT4 for christmas but in the meantime I use elcheapo! i also use the C25K app and Nike GPS + app. and the cals estimated on those two apps and on this website are drastically different to that of my HRM. what do i follow? I usally press the HR button every 5 mins during my work out so i get regular readings

Is your HRM higher or lower?

Use an average of the three.

Use an average of the three.

    Yep. That's what I'd do.

This article talks about net calories burned while running. Worth a read. I had stagnated losing weight as my running miles increased and I was eating to cover the deficit, but I started losing weight again after I stopped overestimating net calories burned running. For me (183 lb. male), I figure roughly 100 cals per mile. May be off, but it seems to work for me.

I'd go with whatever one's the least. That way, you're planning your day better. I'd rather be burning more but thinking I'm burning less.

Even when you get a good HRM, you're going to see that all three differ. The HRM is going to be the most accurate for you individually. I would go with the HRM even if it's a cheapo. However, if that doesn't feel safe, then average the three.

My HRM that didn't have a chest strap told me 2-3x as many calories as I really burned.

Good choice on the FT4. I got mine about 2 weeks ago and LOVE it.
