I'm on the countdown to Thanksgiving. My sis and I are both eating super healthy and really clean (she's lost 40 lbs!!), and Thanksgiving generally means let loose and stuff your face with 10,000 calories at lunch and again at dinner. So, in an attempt to not gain 10 pounds in one day, I'm searching out very low calorie sides that we can enjoy healthfully.

The one I know for sure is mirliton (aka chayote) casserole (which is a Louisiana thing), which is only 38 calories per serving!! I think I might also make roasted Brussels sprouts which are about 100 calories per serving. I also need to find a lightened version of cranberry sauce.

Does anyone have any ideas on healthy sides for Thanksgiving?

I'll also be making some side dishes/desserts from skinnytaste.com. As with any other event, it's all about portion control and pre-planning. :)

Yeah, portion control is important - but I also want to be sure that I have enough alternatives to potato casserole which is probably 500 calories a serving, macaroni and cheese (300+), green bean casserole (400+) etc. Thanks for the ideas!

I make mashed sweet potatoes, but I mash them with Smart Balance and sugar free brown sugar and cinnamon syrup, then I top with some chopped pecans and bake. Everyone loves it and I don't even bother to tell them how good it is for them. Rather than pumpkin pie I make sugar free maple pumpkin flans...little individual ones. I also serve steamed broccoli as a side and green beans with silvered almonds and some chopped garlic. I have to do mashed potatoes or there would be a riot. And gravy, of course! But I'm going to use carbquik to make garlic cheese bisquits..I just won't tell!

I'm going to try this for a new recipe this year: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/george-stella/sausage-and-herb-stuffing-recipe/index.html

for appetizers I'm going to make a garlic cheeseball and have shrimp cocktail.

Oh never mind. guess I'm not doing any of this. I think anyway. I just accepted a job to manage a Gymboree store in a mall. If I give my old job two week's notice that means I'm done the week of Thanksgiving and I screw someone's holiday as my schedule was that I worked on Thanksgiving Day and then had 4 days off. If I take this new job, I'll have to start training right away. They did say I could work both jobs at the same time, so I'm thinking that I will work at the hospital through Thanksgiving and then, of course, I'll be working at the mall all weekend long.

Of course if the hospital offers me more money I'll stay there as the benefits are much better in which case the above menu stands and I will make on Friday.

Whew! My life is all in turmoil right now, but I love having options!

I'm gonna eat what I want on Thanksgiving (track cals) then burn every last one off!
