Pushing through knee pain?

Hi, any runners out there? I've been running for years, but luckily, this is my first experience with knee pain. There's slight pain when I walk or go down stairs, but the real pain starts as soon as I start running and lasts pretty much the duration of the run. It's not excruciating, but it definitely hurts. I've made an appt with a PT, but my question is, should I continue to run and just push through the pain or back off it until I know what's wrong? I don't want to do any damage, but I hate to lose the training time. Thoughts?

Peronally I'd say back off until you've had it looked at, from experience I didn't then ended up having to have an operation. Follow RICE and see how you go.0

Absolutely not. Rest and rest and rest. Ice your knee. You could have torn something that, right now is an easy heal but if you push you could really damage yourself.0

I'd stop until it's checked. Rest and take it easy, and you'll be hitting the pavement again in no time!0

Yeah, back off. I actually experienced some Knee Pain when first starting INSANITY (HIIT), but I took the risk of assessing that it was due to a weak muscle/tendon and kept going. Just slowly stengthening it. If I thought it could be a joint or something really serious, I would've stopped completely. STILL THAT WAS A RISK ON MY PART. Talk to your doc....0

You are getting good advice here. I am not a runner, but I just "got over" knee pain and the doctor told me exactly what these folks are telling you. rest/ice until you know what you are dealing with then rehab accordingly.0

Thanks for all the advice guys! Any thoughts on elliptical/bike? I've been doing the elliptical and haven't felt any pain, so I'm assuming that's ok.0

i have floating patella syndrome and the elliptical is ok on me. but i would still wait until you see your doctor. you don't know what's wrong with it and dont want to irritate it in any way.0

I would wait and see what you're dealing with.
A couple years ago I took up running and got bad knee pain. Went to an ortho, they wanted to do surgery (lateral release) and I just couldn't do it. Went to a chiro and they fixed me right up. I had huge knots and adhesions in my quads, my hips were all tight, etc and I got regular massage therapy and adjustments and it totally fixed the issue. Now I know what NOT to do. I was doing all this running and not strengthening my legs with weights or stretching well. THey diagnosed it as PFPS - patellafemoral pain syndrome and I have some arthritis in my knee. Now I can do squats, lunges, etc with no issues.
What I could do when I really hurt it was ride a bike and I did things like step ups (sideways and front), step downs, bosu ball squats and balancing on one leg on the bosu or on a towel rolled up on the floor0 -
thanks for the great suggestions!0

played soccer for a few decades and had both knees scoped last year. ortho told me that I'm pretty arthritic, so he scared me away from running. I've been pretty low impact since I quit soccer a couple years ago, but just started running outside again. I have an issue with baker cysts forming on the backs of my knees periodically. SO... try swimming laps and using a kick board with training fins (builds leg strenth). or try running laps in the pool. OR, try an elliptical called Precor AMT. you can imitate a running stride on this elliptical, it's awsome!0
