I get my "must haves" at the much more affordable stores and hit up whole foods when I want artisan cheeses, quality olives, or special remoulades, sauces, etc...

Whole Foods buys produce from local distributors. We discovered in Boston that Russo's was the local distributor for Whole Foods, and enjoyed our produce without the ridiculous markup. Perhaps you can do the same?

Just a lil something to keep in mind with regards to Chilean Sea Bass, and probably why it's so expensive(but yes, delicious too) http://www.montereybayaquarium.org/cr/SeafoodWatch/web/sfw_factsheet.aspx?gid=6
  • Whole Foods is super expensive... Bring lots of $$$ I tend to sway more towards my local grocery stores own brand of organics.

Bolthouse Farms Salad dressing. I have found it cheaper at Meijer but I know they have it there.

Their yogurt based Honey Mustard is only 45 calories, no preservatives, 110 mg of Sodium and YUUUMMMYYY!!!!

I love going there. It's like being on a field trip! You MUST hit up the bakery :)

We usually find that certain staples are cheaper there than elsewhere. Things like eggs, milk, the good kind of turkey bacon.

I used to work at Whole Foods and I've never met a more interesting and knowledgeable staff. I get my vitamins from there as well as organic produce. They have a bigger selection of organic produce than any other store in my area. They also provide produce from local growers. I also get special items from there - such as fresh bread and certain cuts of meat I can't find anywhere else. It truly is like a field trip (agreeing with a comment above) and SO worth going - especially since your father works there! Have fun!

The only things I buy there are things I can't find in other stores around here. Stuff like ground flax seeds, some yogurts, gluten-free flour, almond butter and quinoa. Occasionally I'll pick up some free-range chicken or grass-fed beef but the prices are so high, I'm not sure it's worth it!
  • I shop trader joes instead of whole foods. Very good prices and quality. Would like some of the fresh fruits and veggies to be set up a bit different, but overall I've found it is a great place to find really good quality food and stay in my budget. Still have to pick up a few items at a "regular" store but not much.

Love Whole Foods. I do shop at Kroger for a lot of things but their produce and fresh meat and seafood don't hold a candle to WF. Love the fresh breads and artisan cheeses and it's the only place around that carries Arctic Zero...my newest addiction! Oh and the store-made chicken sausages are awesome!

A lot of things are higher than the other stores, but the quality is worth it. Since I only have myself to feed 26 days of the month (hubby is a truck driver), it isn't an issue but I know if I had a family to feed everyday I couldn't shop there as often.

    Enjoy your adventure!

I'm of the same opinion, but not everyone has Trader Joe's. I gather there aren't many in the midwest and south.

no offense to anyone, and please dont yell at me for this, but if someone asks what to get at whole foods cuz they are going to whole foods exclusively to shop, why tell her not to waste her money and discourage her to go if its something she wants to do?

sorry i hate when my friends or ppl i know say things like that when i'm excited about something.

    ok vent over.

I love whole foods. I love their low fat tahini fig dressing @ the salad bar.... if they have that try it! so yummy!

Their sirloin steaks are awesome and not super expensive - much better cuts than standard grocers.
