Calories come from three sources: fat, carbohydrates, and protein. The fat calories label on the nutrition facts just tells you how many of the total calories of something comes from fat rather than carbs or protein.

You want to count the total calories, that's what matters here.

All calories are the same in that they contain the same unit of energy. The fat calories on the most labels are from people wanting low fat items. this is largely because fat is more calorie dense. 1g of carbs and protein have 4 calories, 1g of fat has 9. Keep in mind there are healthy fats that should be eaten.

^^^ This is true in part. That's the whole idea of "calories in, calories out".

As you get more fit and are a little more used to counting calories, you might want to start watching calories from fat. According to national recommendations, you want to keep your fat calories at less than 30% of the total calories

The reason is that it is easier for your body to take fat in your diet and store it if it doesn't need to burn those calories right now. It has to work a little harder to turn extra carbs into fat and a lot harder to do the same with protein.

    Good luck!
