Is there a general rule for this?

I just bought a bag of gala apples claiming that all of them are large and 130 calories, but the apples are smaller than my fist, and I have tiny hands. I would've called them small to medium. There's a pretty sizable calorie difference, so how do you guys figure it out?

I use a red delicious apple as my gauge. They are usually pretty large. I never use small.

First of all, I don't stress about my apple size. Ever.

I log it as medium, typically. Sometimes if it's chopped up for my oatmeal I'll log it as 1 cup of chopped apple.

The MFP apple log I use says a large apple is about 3-4 inches in diameter, and there are about two apples in one pound.

Bagged apples tend to run smaller and therefore cheaper. In the database if you search a bit you will find listings for small, medium, and large apples and some that even include a size range, i.e. 2.75 to 3.25.

I don't worry about my fruit sizes being totally accurate. There is only going to be 10 or 20 calories difference, and there is no need to be that precise. I just estimate it. If you think the apples are medium sized, I'd say put that. I generally find apples in a bag are smaller than loose apples, so even if it says large they're probably a little smaller.

For anything like this, I use a food scale. If you don't have one, invest in one. It's WORTH it!

It's just an apple. Unless you eat a bag of apples a day, I wouldn't worry about it. 30-40 calories variance is a given in most whole foods unless you weigh everything, and even if you weigh it, apples lose mass as the get older, so an apple you pick at the orchard will weigh more than an apple that has been in cold storage for six months, despite the same calories.

The average "medium" apple is approximately 154g, 2.75" in diameter and 80 calories. Use that as a general guide and go up/down based on actual apple in hand and you should be good.

There are obviously lots of variances in calories and macros based on variety, but the above info is a reall good general guideline for apple estimation.

The determination of small/medium/large with apples is based on standardized charts that give the average number of that particular size apple per box/basket/bushel. I think there's a range of 6-10 sizes, depending on the state/company, and the info above falls in the middle, so it's considered the overall average medium.
