Fitness guru Michaels, a fitness and life coach who has appeared on NBC's The Biggest Loser, brings her tough-love style to the pages of her first offering. For those familiar with Loser, Michael's no-excuses approach here may seem less intimidating than it does to those meeting her on television. She writes with an edge, warning readers that they cannot make excuses, they will work hard and they will suffer setbacks, but they will also change their lives for the better.
Her "3-S" (Self, Science and Sweat) plan covers the mental and physical, and Michaels dedicates equal sections of the book to each. In Self, she announces to readers that she was an "overweight and unhappy teenager" who took charge of her life, challenging readers to do the same. While no book has the power to change a person, the tips Michaels provides-create a support system, keep a journal, change your self-talk-do. In Science, Michaels dispels common diet myths (skipping meals is best, diet pills work), provides recipes for meals and snacks and introduces the concept of fast-, slow- and balanced-oxidizers, which determines a person's ideal diet.
The final Sweat chapters include easy-to-follow exercises accompanied by photos, and a five-day-per-week, 12-week fitness program centered on burn-and-tone cardio training. The book and coaching come relatively cheap, but to follow the program without substitution exercises, readers will need access to a gym or a weight machine. And, unfortunately, Michaels does not make house calls.  :noway:

Product Description
Losing has never felt better than with Jillian Michaels, the female fitness guru on Network Nine's hit show The Biggest Loser, who presents a unique and comprehensive health and fitness program that will keep the pounds off for good.
Jillian Michaels knows a thing or two about getting people to lose weight and live a healthier lifestyle. In her new book, Winning by Losing, Jillian offers a comprehensive and integrated program that provides readers with a clear–cut path to total health. Unlike other popular diet books, Winning by Losing works from the inside out, combining a behavioral makeover with a unique diet plan and a no–gimmick workout.
The book is divided into three parts: "Self," "Science," and "Sweat." "Self" focuses on behavior patterns, and shows how unchecked urges and emotional roadblocks lead to unhealthy eating habits. Jillian will help readers address and overcome these issues completely, an accomplishment that is the first and most crucial step towards leading a healthier lifestyle. "Science" is the book's nutritional facet, in which Jillian teaches readers how to create their own personalized diets.
This section will help readers identify their own unique biochemical and metabolic needs, arming them with the knowledge they need to formulate a diet plan far more effective than generic ones offered in other books. "Sweat" utilizes Jillian's expertise to give readers an integrated workout program that combines the most effective elements of different training styles. It doesn't promise to be easy – but it works and lasts.
While there are several recognizable men at the top of the fitness guru chain, including Bill Phillips and Jorge Cruise, this category has yet to see a new female occupy the spotlight. Jillian Michaels is attractive, knowledgeable, and dynamic, and is the perfect candidate to be the next big thing in fitness/health books.

Hey FC....I kinda put my review on the Bob vs. Jillian thread, but here's my 2 cents:
Personally I was already a fan of Jillian, so I was biased from the start. I thought it was well-written, cut-to-the-chase. Bob's book was laid out much the same - start with the mental/emotional part, then the food/calories, and finally exercise. The premise is thus: anyone can tell you how/what to eat and how to exercise, but unless you are mentally & emotionally ready for the lifestyle change - you either won't lose the weight, or it will come back. I think there is a lot of merit to that. I've been big all my life - but I was never able to lose any weight AND keep it off until I realized that I have to/need to do it for myself and not my mom (who put me on numerous diets growing up).
Anyway, back to the book - the second section, regarding food - she has you take a quiz to determine what your metabolic type is. I basically already knew I was a balanced oxidizer (well, I didn't know it was called that) and knew that I had to eat more protein and not as many carbs, because I couldn't lose as well otherwise.
The last section, she gives a 12-week workout plan (it changes every 2 weeks) - personally I've only gotten to week 3, and I had to re-do weeks 1&2 many, many times! Yes it is that hard. (at least for a beginner) When I first started it, after the second day I ached all over - even just trying to lay in bed hurt!! :noway: There is a 'glossary' of sorts that explains how to do the exercises. For the most part it is fairly straightforward, but you will probably need access to a gym with various machines. Some of them can be modified, though - I had to ask songbyrdsweet for assistance. She was very helpful, of course! :flowerforyou:
Ok - that ended up longer than I was expecting! If you have any specific questions...let me know! :flowerforyou:0 -
I also bought it and her book "Making the Cut". I didn't realize until I got it that "Making the Cut" was to help lose your last 10-20 pounds so I held off on reading it. I started reading "Winning by Losing" but haven't finished it yet. I think I just got through the past where it talks about the mental and emotional part. So far it is really good and since I love to read I thought it would be perfect. Plus I am a BIG Jillian fan!! You will like it FC!! Good luck to you! You are my inspiration!!0
