Google Yourself

How many people here have ever Googled their own name?

As a journalism student when I was at uni, we were encouraged to do it on a regular basis as part of our Investigative Journalism unit.

It's crazy how much you can find out about a person, just from Google. We even had to do a project where we picked a famous person and had to find out certain information about them, not normally made available to the public.

Since doing this at uni, I still Google myself fairly regularly. And with my full name not being very common it is SO SCARY how much information about myself is out there.

Seriously, the first 6 or so pages of results on Google are all about me - and the Google images as well!

Try it...

And BEWARE!

Add inverted commas like "Name Surname", much more accurate

I've Googled myself because I have a stalker (no joke). Google any usernames that you use online too; you'd be surprised how much, and how far back, that brings up from any activity of yours online.

    The odd time I do.

I use pipl.com and look myself up...you find old accounts, pages, posts and things from the past.

It's a good way to delete old information and profiles of yourself that you've forgotten about.

I went to a LinkedIn event and during the presentation, they said 1/3 of Google searches were name searches. Scary!

I google myself from time to time because I heard it was a good way to protect against identity theft.

However, there is a monster truck driver with my name (first and last spelled exactly the same way), so 90% of the search results pertain to him. We are also the same age, which makes it even weirder.

Just so y'all know, I do not moonlight as a monster truck driver. Or a dude.

I used to do it regularly when I was looking for a job. Its a good idea to make sure nobody has tagged you in any embarrassing photos or anything like that, because there's a good chance a potential employer will google you as well!

With a surname like Geoghegan, potential managers etc. could get my whole life story if they wanted! Haha.

A side benefit is that when you find yourself, you can remove all trace, so cybercrims can't nick your ID!

Also, on my blog, it gives me a full list of what people have typed in to Google to end up on my blog.

It scares the hell out of me because there are clear attempts of people trying to find me, but who obviously don't know me properly because they've spelt my surname wrong OR put my full name followed by my previous place of work.

    WHAT THE HELL?!

Since I own my own business, I spent a buttload of time trying to be found. I'm proud to say I'm easily found!
  • Seems like there are lots of people with my name. Even a couple of singers (who I hadn't heard of). The only result on the first page that pertains to me is my Google+ account, which has nothing on it.

If I add in my middle name I get nothing even remotely related, as they're all female first names and they're also all colours. I get a lot of colour swatches come up on google images haha.
  • Ha! With Smith for a last name I get nothing!! The ESPN reporter takes up most of the pages and then some doctor that has an egg donor program. I am well hidden!

You might be surprised by how many do it. Where I work now, two potential interns just lost a shot at a job because of stupid
things they had on their unprotected facebook pages. We just watched a special on PBS a few weeks ago about social media and some of the damage its done to people who weren't careful.

I do. Nothing about me comes up. Just a loads of other people with the same name.

I also use different usernames everywhere so even that won't tell you much because I don't put much out there.

A vicar, the vice chairman of the Isle of Man Chamber of Commerce and a MP/Sir from the 16th century none of the above are me!

I've done this previously, but never really looked past the Methodist minister of the first page. However, looked a few pages further today after finding this topic and found, which turns out to be an old school friends blog:

"i ran into [Sara_Gee] on the train yesterday, she told me she thinks she saw my mother... i didnt have the heart to tell that night that mother texted me "is [Sara_Gee] quite big now, cos I think she's on the seat beside me""

This almost made me feel bad - it was from 2006, my last year of high school. I also found it a little ironic given what led me there!
