NO.
If your BMR is 1800 and you eat 1200 calories a day, then your deficit is not 600 calories daily. Period. End of story. ENDE. V KONTZE.

sorry but DUH! I have explained this to 4 people today and most likely there will be at least 4 people tomorrow that think their maintenance is their BMR.0

There is absolutely no useful information in this post.
Why not at least explain the difference? For those of us that are "DUH".0 -

Agreed you say nothing about TDEE in this post at all.0 -

Your lesson for the day:
BMR:(Basal Metabolic Rate) calories you would burn in a coma . You can find your BMR in the "TOOLS" tab
TDEE: (total daily energy expenditure) Total calories burned in a day

Helpful website to estimate TDEE, found using GOOGLE0 -
I said nothing because I wanted people to google and research for themselves. The more important part is that you should not use your BMR to determine your deficit.0

Gosh, I just figured I would find it here, since it's in the "Help" forum and it's TITLED as though it contains actual information and not just a pointless rant. SILLY ME.0 -

Then post in the chit chat forum, or your blog. This is the part where people come to find useful information, not be condescended to.0 -

I wasn't being condescending, and it's not chitchat. It's information. I was hoping people would google and get more information, which is why I intentionally did not write out what the acronyms stood for. Teach a man to fish and all that ...
However, here is an example:0 -
I've posted this before:
The amount of calories (a measure of energy) you need to maintain your current weight (maintenance calories / TDEE) is made up of certain things as follows:
TDEE = BMR + TEF + TEA + NEAT/SPA
BMR is your basal metabolic rate or the energy level needed to power basic functions. This makes up about 55-70% of your calorie needs.
TEF is thermic effect of feeding or the energy level needed to process the amount of food you eat. This is roughly 10% of your calorie needs.
TEA is thermic effect of activity (or specifically exercise such as cardio etc) while NEAT/SPA is non exercise activity thermogenesis / spontaneous activity (such as fidgeting) This makes up the rest of your calorie needs.
To lose weight you simply have to have a calorie level level lower than that needed to maintain your current weight, TDEE rather than BMR (in other words a deficit) You can do this through simply eating less, eating less and exercise or exercise alone.
Incidentally, you will see the bulk of your calorie needs is through things other than exercise (or specifically cardio.) That is why you will sometimes see people say that you are better off focusing on creating a deficit through diet than going overboard on exercise.0 -
CORRECT.:flowerforyou:
I'm on maintenance and my BMR is around 1540 calories... if that is all I ate, I would keep losing weight... rather quickly, actually. No thank you.
I think I'll stick to my 1900-2000 calories (average) per day, thank you very much.0 -

I simply referenced the source where I found the TDEE calculated. However you do sometimes have to go outside of this site to search the info you are looking for. I was just trying to give you a useful tool0 -
I feel compelled to add a final thought.
MFP, and especially MFP forums, should not be a person's sole source of information regarding nutrition and fitness. It should not, in fact, even be one's main source. Many MFP members are knowledgeable, however many are not. The information in the forums is often conflicting and frequently under researched or miscommunicated.
If a person wants to learn more about fitness and nutrition, they should seek out a more reputable source. What is the difference between BMR and TDEE? I wouldn't have answered if asked, because I am not a reputable source. I am a person who has done research. The way I see it, if I would not use the source as an expert to inform a news story then I would not use the source to instruct something as important as my eating habits.
There is a fact contained in this thread. It is this: BMR and TDEE are not the same thing. Please do not limit yourself to this website for information. If you want to know what TDEE is, research it. My guess is, you will find out a lot more along the way.0 -
