Losing weight for my husband while he's in Iraq

Hey everyone...

I am 22 years old, 5'8", and 137 lbs. I just got married on New Year's Eve and my husband left a little over two weeks ago for Iraq and he'll be gone for a year. My goal for now is to get down to 125 lbs and tone up my stomach, butt, thighs, and upper arms. I'm not really overweight at all, I'm just flabby, and I'm tired of it. I want to look FABULOUS for my hubby when he comes home this summer on his two-week leave ("vacation" is what they call it in the civilian world). So I have roughly six months, give or take. Then I want to maintain it until next year when we have our big wedding ceremony (we got married at the courthouse before he left). I have cut out the junk food, soda, and tea (sweet tea was my weakness, I have lived in the south most of my life!). I've cut out fast food. So I'm here hoping this website will help me keep track of my diet and exercise. :)

DO IT FOR YOURSELF!!!! not for someone else~! Tell yourself YOU want to be in the best shape of YOUR life so that you can grow old without worrying about diseases and obesity.
    Good luck :drinker:
  • Welcome to MFP! :flowerforyou: I work for a life insurance company, and just be sure you don't drop below 123 pounds--that will be considered an unhealthy weight for your height by most underwriting standards! You sound like you are an awesome build  , but if it means toning and getting sexy for hubby's return home, then go for it! And, yes, do it for yourself because you want to feel great!

And thank YOU for your sacrifice while your husband is serving and protecting our country! Far too often we forget the families that are left behind!

My fiance just returned to Iraq last week!
Yay! Another kindred spirit. Except you are doing WAY better then me!

I agree with Vans, do this for you.... it will just be a perk for him.

Sounds like you are doing AWESOME... however don't deprive yourself of everything. You can still indulge on occasion and still be okay. Also, look into other sorts of teas (I've tried Sweet Tea and see how it could be a fav).

    Welcome! :flowerforyou:

Thanks for all of the responses! You guys are right, I should be doing this for myself, and I am. I want to feel better about myself. My husband is about an inch shorter than me and 10 lbs lighter than me (he's just got a smaller body!) I think exercise and healthy eating has ALWAYS been his lifestyle, so he maintains a lean body effortlessly. He knows when too much junk food is too much. He knows how active he needs to be. He loves fruit and a variety of food. I really didn't grow up that way...so he has really inspired me to adjust my lifestyle.

One thing I've tried as I'm starting this new routine is that when I'm on the elliptical or the bike and I'm getting to the point where I *want* to quit but I know I could keep going, I play "Bless the Broken Road" on my iPod...it's the song I'm using when I walk down the aisle. It's GREAT motivation and a reminder of one of the reasons I'm doing this. I also want to look amazing in my wedding gown.

Well, I'm off to the gym now! I look forward to getting to know you guys...

  • Welcome! Another army wife here... my husband returned from a 13 month deployment to Iraq in Nov. I hear you about being flabby and wanting to tone up, that's why I'm here as well. Best wishes and I hope the time passes quickly for you while he's away!

I fully agree... It's the only way that you'll be able to succeed in the long-term. Only you can fully appreciate the work that goes into losing 12 lbs. If you do it for your husband alone, you are likely to find that his response to your hard work isn't as gratifying as you'd hoped.

Welcome to the club! Deployments are awesome for losing weight (you can have more control over what you eat since they aren't asking for all the fast food! ) Just focus on your health and R&R will be here before you know it!
  • Good luck!

Thanks for the warm welcome. I need to get a ticker on here, huh? It might look silly though because I've only lost a pound so far (haha I started at 138).

I'm actually a Marine wife though. I'm very fortunate in that my husband is with an air wing and therefore at a "safer" base over there. And I get to talk to him pretty much daily. The physical separation is really awful though. I can't really find anything to substitute for the companionship I have with him. I just started a photography business last year though, so that has definitely kept me busy. I did two bridal shows last month and I'm doing another one in March, so my year is filling up quickly with weddings. I think the last 6 months of this year will FLY by with my first wedding to shoot in June, two in July, one in September, 2 (possibly 3) in October, and one in November! Plus all of the engagement sessions will probably be done this spring.

Anyways...I spent about an hour and a half at the gym today. I'm trying my HARDEST not to weigh myself everyday. I think I'm going to stick to weighing myself on Mondays or something. When I weigh myself everyday it gets a little depressing with the fluctuation. I get all excited that I lost a pound, then I check again the next day and I'm up a pound! So I need you guys to tell me "hey, dork, stop looking at the scale everyday!"
