I've been going back and forth on signing up to do the Chicago Marathon in October. I've never done one before, but I've always thought it would be a great accomplishment. I've got time to train and I love to run, but I'm just a little scared.....Help me make a decision!!!

Wow, no. Maybe one day...but this year my goal is a 10k. I did the 5ks last year. Good luck if you decide to do it! You'll have to let us know how it goes!

I am running in a half marathon in 2 weeks. I didn't start running till this past September. I found a Galloway training group and have been training with them since. They run a minute and walk a minute. 2 weeks ago we did 14 miles. So I know I can cover the distance. I would bet in Chicago you can find several groups that are training for that marathon. I really think the group is the way to go. You get to meet people and you feel you have to go train. The training for a marathon does take some time, but think about all those calories you will be able to indulge in. I am already thinking about stepping up to the marathon distance for next year. Good luck with your training.

I've done a half. I think someday I'll do a full, but right now I don't have time to train (kids are 4 and 7 and I work full time).

If you have the time and the ambition to do it - go for it. Even if you have to run slow/walk, it's still a HUGE accomplishment.

If you're really unsure, is there a half you could do somewhere and try that first? I know a lot people get hooked on them once they start.
  • You can do it! How far can you run now?

BTW - You look great in your picture! You already look like you could run a marathon!

Yes, I have run 2 full marathons and 7 half marathons. I ran Chicago in October of 2007.

I currently am a trainer/mentor for the Fargo Marathon Training Group and am working with beginner runners preparing for the half this May.

I would be glad to answer questions or offer some assistance to you.

    Thanks - Sheri

I started running June of 2006 with the goal of running a 10k on Thanksgiving. I had never run before and the first time I ran 2 miles I thought I was going to die, let alone run 6.2 miles! But I just started adding on little more each day and by the time the 10k came, my longest run was 10 miles. Some friends and I decided to run a half marathon the following February but it was a lottery and we didn't get picked. So then we just decided to go for a marathon. We started training the beginning of January 2007 and ran the Salt Lake City Marathon April 21, 2007. It was an awesome accomplishment, and one I never thought I would do! Just shows what your body in capable of! I had such a great experience, my husband and I ran the same marathon in 2008. You can find lots of info online about training and fueling your body. Just find a training schedule that works for you and be sure to follow it. Make sure you always do the long runs. They are what will prepare your body for the endurance you'll need. Runner's World has a great magazine I subscribed to that was inspiring as well as informative. They also have a website. Good luck!

I did a 1/2 marathon after just running for 6 months. Boy was that hard. I didn't really train for it and just jumped right in. At about mile 10 I thought I would have to stop because the pain in my knee was so bad (my it band was really acting up). We are doing the Broad Street Run in May and the Philly ING 1/2 in Sept. My group wants to do a full marathon in Nov. but only 1 person in our group has ever done a marathon. She ran the NYC marathon last year.

I agree with the group thing trainingg and possibly group running. I ran my 1/2 with people in my running group. Without their encouragement I never would have finished (much less started). I am not sure my body could handle a full marathon. I will have to wait and see how the training goes first. Good luck if you decide to do a full one.

Yeah I've run a couple of marathons and numerous half marathons and loads of 15k, 10k etc. What are you scared of?

Thanks! Right now I run about 3 times a week anywhere between 3 and 6 miles. Jogging/Running combo for interval work.

25.6 is a long way - but I really like the idea of joining a group.

That's great to know! I plan to do a few races this summer to get an idea of timing and such. I run on a treadmill currently because it's freezing and snow covered here in Michigan. As soon as it starts to get nice out I plan to get outdoors. I just bought one of those Nike Plus adapters for my iPod. I thought that would help a bit with training and distance running. Any advice you can give me would be appreciated. My main goal is to finish...of course, I'd like a good time, but I figure I should focus on one thing at a time.

I have! Only one full and also 2 half marathons. I'm training for a half in May now!

I said I'll never do another full, but it's just the long training that I don't enjoy. I like to mix things up and got into triathlons last summer. LOVE it! Good luck if you do decide to train! (and I'm in central IL!)
