 My weigh in was this morning and I have lost 2lbs this week but I was wondering if it would be healthy to lose more than that a week. I want to lose about 3-5 lbs a week if possible and still do it in a healthy way. Any tips and advice would been appreciated.

You prob could, but it wouldn't be healthy, it's recommended at 2 for the highest to be safe

That is what I figured. Thanks. I was just curious because it seems that people do it but I just don't want it to come back just as fast.

I agree with Sara, MFP has it's limits for a reason.
Tons of studies show that between 1-2 lbs a week is best.
Now some will lose more then that on occasion, but there are MANY variances that come into play with that.
I'd stick to what MFP is recomending (2 lbs is an amazing loss!)

Just keep up with what you are suppose to be eating and exercising, you maybe surprised and have a higher loss some weeks. Just depends on what you body feels like giving up  Congrats on your 2 lbs!

It's safer to set your goals on 1-2lbs; however, sometimes you'll find yourself losing faster than that which is always a great surprise but stay safe and healthy and stick with the 1-2lbs a week, it'll come off faster than you will realize :)

You want to burn fat, rather than lose water or muscle mass - so it's best and healthiest to keep it in the 2 pounds/week range.

My understanding is that it's easier to re-gain the weight if you've lost it very quickly. I can imagine the scale bouncing back and forth, which would be far more discouraging than watching it steadily drop!

Actually...when I started on here I am 5'9 and I weighed 174 lbs, the first week I lost 6 lbs and then the second week I lost 4!! I was never hungry, ate lots (I have 1200 calories a day but walk 25 minutes every day plus work out so i was never eating just 1200 calories a day, usually around 1350-1400?) and never felt starving ever!!! I am the worst dieter ever so losing 6 lbs the first week was huge for me and totally got me motivated!! I drink ooodles of water, take vitamines and really have never felt better!!! although it may not be healthy for most...i feel the healthiest I ever have. The 3rd week I lost 2 lbs so obviously starting to slow down a little on my end. I am down to 162 and only want to get to 155 so i expect the next little while to be slow but that's fine because i have changed so many things in my life this last 3 weeks, I can't ever go back!!!!

Thanks congrats on your weight loss as well. :flowerforyou:
  • It makes sense why you shouldn't lose more than 2 lbs in a week. But how on the biggest loser do they lose 12, 15, 20 or more lbs in a week? I wonder if they gain it back? I wonder if it's still considered "safe" for them to be losing so much weight. You know?

I was so shocked this morning when the scale actually went down I had to take a second look make sure I wasn't dreaming. I like losing 2 lbs a week just wasn't sure if people could lose more than that. Thanks

Exactly! That is why I was wondering how they lost all that week working with personal trainers and still be a healthy rate I still not sure how that works out but I will stay on 2lbs/week journey :drinker:

Biggest Loser is an extreme in every sense of the word.
You have severely obese people who have nothing to do but focus on losing weight every minute of the day. They are all monitored by medical professionals.

Don't compare THEIR "reality" to what is reallity...cause it's not gonna balance out.
Unless of course you have their resources and time.

It's a great motivational tool (even though I avoid it), my mom loves it! However, she'll sit down with a bowl of ice cream to watch it too (Yeah when Bob mentioned that a few weeks back...it kicked her in the teeth).

So be careful when you compare your weight loss to theirs.... totally different circumstances.

2 pounds a week is healthy, anything more than that and you are not giving your body what it needs. Also, if you lose too much too quickly, you will have a lot of extra sagging skin.

to lose 5 lbs a week you'd need a daily deficit of 2500 calories. For me that would mean literally eating nothing, not a single calorie AND working out to burn about 700 calories. Obviously that won't work. Stick to 2 lbs a week, that's a ton and it really adds up in the long run. The biggest loser is a television show, we don't all go out and live in the woods just because we saw it on Survivor right?

Well..and just goes to show how crazy unhealthy I was before!hahahaha..My family is genetically pretty lean and I was a "don't eat all day and then eat everything in sight at night eater" so...for me...all it took was changing when I eat and NOT sitting and eating an entire bag of sunchips and calling it dinner!hahahaha...so ya...I mean....I honestly didn't expect to lose that much and it actually made me sad when I did because it showed how much damage I was doing to my own body.......my brother and sister are both very lean people and I always thought I was just the heavier one and it's sad to see I convinced myself of that when really, I was creating my problems!! I just wanted to tell you an instance where it did happen.....and like i said, this was a lifestyle choice for me.....not a "i need to lost x amount of weight by this date" thing...i accepted I was doing harm to myself and needed to change!!! Like everyone on here said...slow and stead wins the race...so I would be happy to lose 2 lbs from now on!!!!!!!

:drinker: Yay! We can do it either slow or some weeks fast pace. As long as the weight is coming off I am fine with that!

I read somewhere that their show isn't actually based on a real calendar. What I mean is, their "weekly" weigh-ins are not actually seven days apart. They're more like monthly weigh-ins. And, the point about the contestants being severely obese is exactly right. The more a person has to lose, the faster it comes off, in the beginning. I lost 16 lbs in my first four weeks, but now it has slowed and even rebounded a bit, but I am still losing inches and gaining muscle. So stick with it, it works, because if it didn't, we wouldn't have members like Tam and Fitness Chick who have lost AMAZING amounts.
