I am on my 3rd day here, and I don't know if I messed up when I entered my goals or what but I'm 342 calories over my goal and I'm starving. Is 1330 calories a day net realistic? I haven't exercised today because I just don't have any energy. Thoughts, Ideas, suggestions??? Help...

1,330 sounds a bit small. O_o Maybe you should up the calories or eat more fibrous, filling foods.
I would personally go up, but that's me. Open diary? =D0 -
Calculate your BMR and maint calories!0

that seems really low for a guy - how do you have your settings done?0

EAT! 1300 is not sustainable! I am 5'3", 120 lbs, and I eat an average of 1700-2000 calories a day. Just make your calories count by eating nutrient rich foods like chicken, Greek yogurt, oatmeal, nuts, fruit, and veggies.
Ok, so now go eat!0 -

Agreed - check the calorie calculation for sex and activity level. And down some quality protein.0 -
Its also really early too, my first 3-4 days were SUPER hard to eat enough to keep me full AND stay under my calories. Double check all your figures and watch what you are eating closely. Make sure not to waste calories on drinks like sodas or high calorie coffees.
Because your profile implies activity in your firefighting, that also suggests you have your activity level too low. That will make a difference! Other than seeing your stats and food diary... those are my suggestions!0 -
Think your settings are messed up. like everyone else is saying.0
-
I haven't seen your diary, but I bet if you cut the carbs to 50g or less a day and increased your protein you wouldn't be as hungry.0
-
Check you settings again, I think you set it to 2 lbs per week, follow the recommended one which is 1 lbs per week0
-
1330 calories way too low. Especially for a man. Looks like your profession keeps you active as well. No surprise you are hungry! You may want to re-group and re-calculate. You will starve at that level.0
-
I think it all depends on what you put in for your goal weight and the amount of time you want to reach it. I know for me I wanted to lose 44 lbs by April and I am on a 1200 calorie plan, but I am a woman and my starting weight was 179. I would recheck your goals cause that does seem a little low.0
-
Since you're a man your calories should be much higher. Even I (a 5'5" woman) eat at least 1500 per day when trying to lose weight.0
-
I agree with everyone else. You can't starve yourself. If you eat too low a calorie you're metabolism with halt. It thinks it needs to conserve so won't let any fat go. Eat to lose is true, just eat healthy.0
-
You only have 15 pounds to lose, so I'd recommend only half a pound a week. When I was losing weight I set mine to half a pound a week (I'm 5'5) and it gave me 1460, so unless you're 4 feet tall, 1330 is ridiculously low.0
-
I'm female, 5'2" & am losing between 1 to 2 pounds a week (closer to 1 than 2!) & I'm supposed to eat 1490 calories a day!
I do go over frequently even though just a little bit for the most part.0 -
You're male and a fire fighter, so assume you would be quite tall?
If so, I cannot imagine how mfp would calculate your calories to be so low.
I have to admit, mfp also came up with ridiculously low figure for me if I want to maximise my rate of weight lose (2 pounds per week).
But, no thanks, I prefer to take a slower and easier course where I do not feel quite so hungry.
I've been logging for almost 150 days now and agree with other comments that increasing your protein fills you up. Eggs, lean meat, beans, lentils. They do fill you up. I also suggest high fibre foods (eg all bran cereal in the morning) and lots and lots of water.0 -
For a male its generally not recommended you go under 1500 calories so not sure why MFP would let you go under. Calculate your BMR and try to stay there at least.
I'm using rough estimates but ...
your profile says you want to get to 165 and you're trying to lose 15 so I'm assuming you're at 180. Even if you're at an average 5'9"ish, your BMR would be about 1820. Multiplying that by 1.55 for an active individual (being a firefighter & working out) says your TDEE is about 2821 meaning at 1300 you're at less than half of your daily needs!
I would check that your settings are correct and then set it to 1 lb a week to start. If you're only trying to lose 15 lbs, 1 lb may even be too aggressive and you may want to try 1/2 lb a week. You could probably cut at anywhere between 1850 - 2500 cals a day and get good results. See what works for you and adjust from there. Good luck!0 -
wow! Thanks for all the help I'm having a small snack and I feel better. I'm trying to do the calculating calorie needs thing. Fire fighting can be a physically demanding job at times, but sometimes it isn't so it's hard decide how many calories to plan for? I also find myself eating at the station just in case we get a call, cuz I don't want to be hungry on a call. Also my schedule id almost impossible to set a workout plan to. I work 10, 24 hour shifts a month with no real pattern. Plus just guessing I have to think I was eating around 2000-2200 calories a day until Tuesday when I started.
How much is carry over allowed? Like if I'm on duty and go over by 500 calories can I cut 250 the next 2 days I'm off? Thanks for all the help and encouragement I think I'm going to need it. And again I apologize for all the bad spelling and grammar.
Thanks Ray
PS 5'7"0 -
You should have only a deficit of 500 to 1000 calories per day to lose weight. so say your bmr is 2821 per day, at 1300 calories you are already at a deficit of 1521 calories without exercise. If you add your exercise calories burned into it no wonder you have no energy!!!0

Heres the deal on schedule issues...Pack your food the night before and stick to what you make.
Look into healthy Meal Replacement shakes.
Not the crap they sell in the store.
The stuff you make at home/station.
If you have a blender and a freezer then you can have a meal in a glass.
Dont do all meals like this because it goes against what our bodys are meant to do and thats EAT!
For smart phone users you can download Whole Living Smoothies app and use that!
Also If you arent hitting your protein goal, 1g of protein per lean body mass, at 5'7" you would probably be about 140ish?
LBM would be about 130ish? So 130g of protein a day.
Go buy Gold standard Whey from the vitamin shoppe $45 for 5lb jug (77 servings) and add a scoop to the shakes.
No excuses! Fat=ugly Muscle=Sexy beast!
PS: Protein early in the morning curbs appetite and boosts metabolism for the rest of the day.
First meal should always be appx 40g protein and high carbs.
MGS me for more tips bro!0 -
Guys should be eating no less than 1500 calories a day, a good amount for a guy is 2000-2200 calories a day. You NEED to eat more. I was eating 1200 calories a day, I lost maybe .5 pound a week, I eat now from 1500-2000 calories a day and I lost over 2 pounds this week. Good luck!0
