watching for Food Network?

Do any of you enjoy watching for Food Network?
I LOVE this station (probably what got me into trouble in the first place), but I still LOVE the Barefoot Contessa, and Rachel Ray, Hungry Girl, the Neelys, Marcela, and Sandra Lee.

I am wondering if it is a good idea to skip these shows at night (which is the only time I watch TV), because it may be causing my night time snacking.

What about all of you out there that have had success losing weight. Are you watching cooking shows?

  • I think Rachel Ray has a big horse mouth and she bothers me so I don't watch her lmfao. ^_^
    However I DO love Good Eats but it's because it's got a small bit of science in it. I love getting ideas from them but trying to add healthier ideas to whatever I see is on TV. =D
  • I do not watch cooking shows when I'm on a diet. Its just asking for trouble. Hungry girl should be fine but Barefoot Contessa, Paula Dean, and the Neelys not such a great idea lol. Especially "Stick of Butter" Paula lol.

    I can't stand watching Food Network, Cooking channel, Travel channel or any other channel that shows food all the time.

    I like a show here or there, but only rarely do I watch them.

    And actually, watching Paula Deen makes me feel a little sick. I am not sure why it bothers me since I'm not actually eating it, but the quantities of butter that she uses are downright gross.

    I only watch the shows that talk about the history of a certain food, or highlight restaurants that I've actually been to. I once saw a show about the nation's best pizza places, and I'd been to about half of them already. It was a fun show to watch.

    I'm a little twisted....I watch the cooking shows while I'm on the tread, elip or stationary bike.

    It helps me pass the time. Doesn't seem to make me eat more...again, I am a lil nutty.

    I love Food Network and don't give up watching it. When you watch House Hunters does it make you want to buy a new house? When you watch football on Sundays does it make you want to suit up? Maybe if you are watching a show and you feel hungry, you are hungry! If I can watch someone else exercise and not get up, I can surely watch someone else eat and not head to the kitchen. This is just what works for me.

    My gym actually plays the Food Network on the TVs in the cardio area.

    Watching Diners, Drive-ins and Dives while working out makes the thought of eating that crap disgusting.

    I'd say it's all about your level of self-control. No matter where you go in the world, you're going to run into a cupcake at some point. Might as well be ready for it.

  • The best description I've heard for all these shows is "food porn". And, just as watching porn gets one revved-up for sex, IMO, these shows get one revved-up for eating.

    Of course, porn with a pizza delivery guy kinda covers both bases. :)

    I love cooking shows. I either watch a show and try to gross myself out by mentally adding up how man calories they manage to stick into a dish (sometimes you'll be pleasantly surprised!!), or I use their recipes as inspiration for lower calorie versions.

    LOL I don't like Rachel Ray either >.>

    You guys all Rock! Some great advice and perspectives. I do the same thing as some others where I watch and think of ways to make it healthier with whole foods, less fats, or substitutes that are more calorie friendly.
    But I think those of you that advised not to watch to reduce the temptation also have a point, so I think I will stick to the shows that offer some of the better (higher quality/whole foods/or lighter) foods and then try to tweak those to make them fit into my new lifestyle.

    Then again, nothing takes away your appetite quite like "Man vs. Food". Watching Adam struggle to finish a 10 pound burrito certainly doesn't make me hungry.

    Very True. And seeing his weight gain is a real eye opener and gets me all gunhoe on quality food and appropriate portions.
