Soy

So I have been watching food documentaries on netflix, listening to health podcasts and all say that soy is really not good for you! I saw a quart of soymilk in my mums fridge the other day and freaked out. It's in almost everything anyway...
I'm the kind of person who watches those documentaries and walks around the kitchen not knowing what is safe to eat. Maybe I should stop watching food documentaries...hmmmm
What does the MFP community have to say about soy?

I have heard different things, but all in all in moderation it's ok and great for those who are vegan I would say adults and not much for children ... Now I have watched all sorts of food documentaries lately in netflix and what I am more worried about is pesticides, and the things meat can do to you!!! So I feel you there, it is quite upsetting all the facts anyways.0

The only thing that makes people think soy is bad for you is its high estrogen levels. However, you have to eat a mass amount for it to have any negative effects. Don't worry about it0

I've been pondering the same thing...for a while I strayed away from Soy, then I realized A. I am a woman so how bad can some extra estrogen be, and B. it's probably not SOY that is the enemy but how it is processed. I have been making my own "milks" and soy will be my next attempt. I'm becoming more and more anti-processed food0

Here's a very good answer to that very question.

I try to avoid it. Yet, I keep Braggs Liquid Aminos for special occasions, maybe because of the nutrients.0

Soy can be really good for you or not...depending. It is full of protein and calcium as well as phyto estrogens. If your mom is menopausal it may be great for her. I have ovarian cysts so, while I love soy (could eat it all day), it makes my periods hellish.0

Women and men should be equally worried about excess estrogen and estrogen mimicing compounds. They are implicated in infertility, declining sperm counts, endometriosis, and a number of other problems I don't recall right now.0 -
Extra estrogen eh? Would that help develop the chest that never formed during puberty? Haha I kid. I second almond milk. Yum!0

infertility? declining sperm counts? and here I was thinking the extra estrogen might HELP me get pregnant....I need to do more research!0 -

What you have to know is that the different hormones have to be at certain levels during different times of the cycle. There is one use of soy that some women find useful for fertility - those who have problems ovulating at all sometimes use soy ISOFLAVONES (a special form of soy) for 5 days in the beginning of the cycle (days 3-7 or 4-8 or 5-9, depending on some factors) in order to induce ovulation. But chronically high levels are counterproductive. Knowing this is one of the reasons I avoid it - if it can be used in place of strong fertility meds (clomid) why would I want to have high levels all the time - it will interfere with my normal hormones.0 -
