5'4" @ 230 lbs - feet problems

As you can see, my height/weight ratio is all kinds of wrong, and I'm only 23. Do my pained feet stem from this? I know it seems like a pretty obvious DUH, but I want to know if anyone that weighs in my range or higher if they experience the same issue, and what kinds of workouts they manage.

Does it hurt all the time, is it worse first thing when you get out of bed? what exercise if any do you do now?

Before I lost weight, I would get stress fractures in my feet... They finally healed when I lost some of the weight..

I'm 5'1,when I weighed 240 lbs,i had major foot problems! Standing for a period of time would make it more painful, after losing weight,i could tell the difference. But you might want to get it checked out just to make sure.

it's always worse right out of bed, or after long periods of sitting at my desk at work, I have to momentarily hobble before it feels stretched and walkable again.

I'm not a dr, but I have plantar fasciitis and its sounds like the same thing I had it only in one foot but now in both since I started running.walking more! I would recommond google it and you will find lots of stretches and icing type things to help, also if you can go to your dr and they will help you to also make sure thats really what it is! The chiropracter at my gym told me I should quit running till I lose some weight to help my heels heal but I'm not ..tired of using my weight as a excuse ..but I do the exercises and iciing when they are bothering me!! good luck message me if you can't find anything and Ill send you the stuff I have!!

But once again I'm not a Dr. just my experience =)

Yep it sounds like Plantar faciatis (sp). I only started getting it once I hit over 280, I am 5'5. It only affects my right foot and kills me...as it progressed I started having left knee problem (if you look it up on wikipedia) it will explain how your knee can hurt too. People that are overweight get it alot or people who are athletes. The only way to really get it "resolved" is to lose weight or get the foot inserts. My grandma had it horrible and spent $$$ on the foot inserts but that was 8 years ago, so now they have Dr. Scholl's at walmart where you stand on the thing. They are $50. I was broke and dealt with the pain for weeks until I couldn't stand it anymore, I couldn't get out of bed in the morning or to use the restroom without barely being able to walk. With the inserts it helps but as I am typing my right foot still hurts a little, I just worked out. I hope once I lose more weight it will help it more.

Yeah, I was running on the treadmill for a while before it started to really affect me. started out as a small twing every once in a while, now it's constant. i'm trying to switch to the elliptical and just plain walking until I get some considerable weight off, THEM begin running again. such a shame that i've actually damaged by body by poor eating habits. :( what an eye opener..

Thank you both for your help with this! I'm going to go on a google quest on this and possibly get a doc to take a look, although I pretty much know he's just gonna tell me to lose weight. ;D
    Thanks again!

In the meantime, try some ice too. That will help bring down some inflammation. If it were me, I would also take a painkiller. Ask your doc what s/he thinks would work for you.

    Could be plantar fasciitis.
My wife has the very same symptoms and has done all the stretching, ice, brace at night. Doc is getting her orthotics. Surgery is next step.
  • I agree that it sounds like plantar fascitis. I started having trouble with it in both feet back in May 2010. Definitely start doing the stretches as soon as possible as well as icing it in the evening. Do it EVERY evening. Before getting out of bed in the morning, lay on your back and just stretch out your calf muscle. It does help to relieve some of that initial pain in the morning. After 2 cortizone shots in my left foot, that foot has done better. Unfortunately, I ended up having foot surgery this past May on my right foot.

Definitely check into a good, supportive shoe with arch support. I think I tried out 10 different pairs of shoes before I found ones that worked for me. I did purchase a good pair of OTC orthodics at a running store and they worked for awhile. I now have prescription inserts.

Good luck to you & definitely see a dr

he will probley recommend some stretches and icing..you freeze a water bottle and roll it under your foot works pretty good..they will suggest inserts and also sometimes they will recommend a boot you can sleep in that keeps your foot flexed.....it works for some but not all! Good luck!! also I was talk to take a anti inflammatory before working out to help it...seems to help!

I have noticed probably about 75-85% reduction in my pain after wearing my inserts daily for several hours. I am a SAHM and don't go very many places so I am barefoot alot which doesn't help, but I try to wear my nike's with the inserts and trust me that horrible excruciating pain is now barely noticeable. I just worked out now and I am a little sore in the foot (I did it barefoot so thats probably not great should have had the insert) but I would HIGHLY recommend the inserts. $50 is cheap compared to what a foot dr. would charge. The key is to wear it consistently and keep wearing them. But I noticed a difference within a day or two.

I have the same problem and someone suggested this exercise and it really works..immediately gets the pain under control! Before going to bed and before getting out of bed, sit at the edge of your bed get a soda bottle (glass) or anything similar to it put it on the floor and put your foot on the bottle and roll back and forth. It stimulates the nerves and relaxes your foot it feels so good for something so simple.
