hello all i was watching food hospital yesterday and their was this poor young girl who had pcos really bad and they wanted to treat it with food and not medication something im all for its basically a low gi diet with soya. ive tried the low gi and it wasnt for me but what i found interesting was the websites advise on exercise it claimed woman with pcos need to do a minium of 45 minutes exercise everyday and anything up too an hour, so my confusion is nhs say to get atleast 30 mins 5 times a week so do we need extra due to the pcos? i do atleast 30 mins everyday 7 days a week sometimes 45 but rarely 60. what do others do?

hi
has to do with diet and excercise watching portions.
Did it take you a long time to lose the weight?0 -
i think it has to do more with eating... like 95% food and 5% excercise?0

wow congrats! i think it has to do more with diet. try and avoid carbs.. eat more veggies. and if you go over your calories excericse it out. also drink a lot of water! it is very helpful. sometimes you may think you are hungry but really you are not just dehydrated.
Organic Apple cider vinegar is awesome. it helps suppresses hungry drink 2 teaspoons with 8oz-12-oz water.0 -
I do about 30 mins per day minimum but have recently bumped it up, however i have read a study recently that talks about pcos women having greater success on a 1200 cal diet. Now, i have gone down to 1500 but aim closer to the 1200 mark, but also eat back my exericse calories and have had consistent loss week on week (13 weeks).0

I will admit that I haven't looked at the NHS recommendations for health with regard to exercise. I think in general though, the UK recommendations tend to be more focused on improving what we (as a nation) are doing rather than aiming for the optimum amount (which is why for example you have '5 a day of fruit and veg' while somewhere like Australia that is trying to go for optimum is '2 fruit and 5 veg per day'. Obviously there are positives and negatives to both approaches but I can see how it would be confusing.
I think the most recent research suggests that doing an hour 'most days' ie every day but occasionally you might miss one, is best. But, they are talking about walking or moderate activities. If you are doing high intensity activities then it can be less than this. There is some breaking research though that suggests that a more active lifestyle in general (e.g. people who have active jobs or social lives) is much better for health than 'bursts' of exercise. So, who knows! I would definitely say that anything you manage to do is a good thing so don't stress if you aren't quite meeting the recommendations.
As a side note, the reason exercise is so important in PCOS is because it helps to reduce insulin resistance.
Hope that helps.0 -

Funny enough when I was exercising (heavily 2-3 days a week like 2-3 hours of cardio and strength) plus a good 30 minutes at least, every day, I had good muscle gains but minimal weight loss (and not great fat loss) BUT when i do atkins-style LOW carb (i'm talking 20 carbs) I am able to lose weight MUCH better.0

Check out the Groups for the PCOS Cystas group - very helpful.
I have a very long struggle with PCOS and yes, I feel that I have to fight twice as hard to lose the same amount of weight as others due to the Insulin Resistance portion.0
