hey all,

does anyone know what we get ulcers from?
and how to get rid of them?

they are awful, hurts to eat, to talk... in the past couple months i have gotten new ones every couple days?

the reason i'm asking here is i never got them before i lost weight :S

I heard they could be caused by stress, is this true?

  • i have had them a lot in the past....terrible things!! you can buy mouth wash from the chemist but i have found that making a mouthwash from salty water works as well as anything.

may take a day or two but then they go away really fast

good luck....i can sympathise with you!!

I've read in the past that they may be linked to a vitamin B deficiency in some people. I personally get them any time I've injured my mouth. If for instance, I bite the inside of my cheek, in a few days I'll have an ulcer.
You can rinse with salt water, press a warm tea bag to it for a few minutes a day, and other than that I haven't found much that helps.

My grown daughter gets them pretty often. The dentist told her the other day not to eat hard cereals, potato chips or other scratchy foods. And he told her not to eat mints or chew gum. All of these things are things that she loves to do. I will have to mention to her the vitamin B deficiency thing that someone else posted.

I chew gum every day... I guess this could be a reason :(

I used to get them all the time too, but it was always after eating a bag of crisps (potato chips).

I had to stop eating them really, I have them now and again but I eat them really carefully.

I actually have a wee ulcer, but I bit my lip and that was what caused that.

Will look into the vitamin deficiency!
  • I had a massive breakout in high school (first time ever!) And, yeah, it sucks! Since then, I've had smaller breakouts, but the cause, for me, I have found is far too much sugar and/or salt. Halloween and Christmas are bad times of the year for me because of this. :/ When it happened in high school, the doctor recommended that I go out and buy this oral gel. It burned like HELL! But, it actually burned those suckers off within three days. Now, I find that cutting way back on the sugar and salt when they start forming does the trick. Good luck!

The lesion is called an apthous ulcer normally found on the soft tissue of the inner lips and cheeks. Your dentist may be able to perscribe a solution that will ease the discomfort. The duration is usually 7 to 10 days...no mater what you do. We recommend that one should stay away from acidic foods and drinks, hard crunchy foods that may irritate the area. If the ulcers are rampant throughout the mouth and on the hard tissue near the teeth or on the tongue, you will definitely want to see your dentist as it may be a primary viral or herpetic ulcer.

I used to get them all the time before I had braces. My crooked teeth would scratch the inside of my lips. They are pretty common with people in my family. The best thing that I have found for them is to mix salt in water & kind of swish it around the ulcer. Other than that I always used Orajel to numb them when they hurt or when I would eat.

*I still get them if I bite my cheek or eat something that scratches the inside of my mouth
