stroutman81: it is very possible my information is out of date; most textbooks are out of date in my field before they are even published. My focus in my Master's is not metabolism (I'm more interested in how the structure of a protein is related to its function, completely different aspect) so I'm going by what they taught us in the Metabolism class and by what others that are focusing in that are have told me. I will check out your articles further, I read the abstracts and they are quite interesting. I did not mean to come off sounding as a know-it-all. I am always up for learning new information (hence why I'm still in school:smile: )

Funny, I posted the very same thing on my wall last night about text books being outdated before reaching the published state. Glad to hear you have an open mind when it comes to learning. Unfortunately that seems to be a rarity nowadays. Good luck with your classes.

Thank you! I too agree that having an open mind (about anything!) has become a rarity. I hate buying the books because since they are already out-dated at publication, usually they switch the next semester to the newest one. This means I pay $200+ for a book and then get $15 back if I'm lucky.

Seing the "Muscle weighs more than fat" statement makes me wish we had a "SLAP" button.
You cant have good lean body mass without protein so unless shes eating 800 calories of milk, whey, chicken, eggs, soy protein isolate etc and nothing else...she isnt getting muscle!!!!

If we were to drop her down to her goal she would probably look like a cast member of Pirates of the Caribbean!
    Sexy skeleton? I think not!
Eat and enjoy the food for a while.
Restart that metabolism with positive 2k diet for at least 2 weeks and for gods sake talk to your doctor or a pro nutritionalist!

    Hugs!

This is a reason that you don't look at weight on a day/day or week/week basis. You fluctuate so much sometimes. The goal is to trend downwards. I'm totally guilty of this because I usually gain 3 lbs with no food or exercise change the week of TOM. When that time of the month comes around I purposely try to stay away from my scale for mental health reasons!!!

I would keep doing what you are doing, eat back your exercise calories since the levels on here are already built in with a deficit for you to lose weight and wait a bit. If you are working out your muscles may be using more water to repair, your sodium may be high and retaining water or you may be having an off week. Our bodies aren't perfect and they don't always go down.

Plus, while most of us want to lose weight, I think everyone would agree that the weight loss is a part of the ultimate goal to be healthier. If you are feeling skinnier and losing inches and eating in a healthy way then that is the big goal. The weight will come off!!!

Yup. Total PITA. Which is why, if you have the time and access, staying abreast of pubmed really does help you see the trends.

I have access, just not time! I already follow 6 journals that are specific to my field of Biochemistry and its hard to keep up with large databases and journals. I need to find a way to squeeze it in.

    I hear ya.

I use http://pubcrawler.gen.tcd.ie/, which helps out. But it still comes down to finding the time to read and absorb.
