I am new to running. Started 6 month ago. My first 5K was in September. The second will be tomorrow.

What is the next distance that new runners run after they manage to complete 5K without stopping?

Should I concentrate on doing more 5Ks and get a little faster or consider a longer distance?

Could do that, or start training for a 10k. I jumped right into a 21 week training program for a 10 Miler. Probably not the best next step, but it's local with a group training plan and group runs.

When you train for distance you'll naturally get faster. A 10k would be next, then 15k, half marathon, full marathon then ultras of various distances, (50 miles, 100 miles).

Finding your preferred distance means trying a bunch of different races. I would say start running longer, but continue to race 5k's then you'll be ready for 10k when decide to try that.

Good luck! There are some running groups here on MFP now with lots of good info. You should join us!

10k's, half marathons, mud runs, bike races or centuries, triathlons. you name it, there is probably a race for it.

It's been a while since I was a runner (and man, do I miss it!), but you have some options here. You can run more 5Ks and try for better times, you can try for longer distances (10K is the next you'll generally find offered), OR, you can use a resource like Runner's World to find quirky races with interesting twists. There are races through the mountains, along the oceanside, into the desert, around beautiful cities and suburbs all across the world. There are charity races (my personal favorite --- great atmosphere, less 'tude, good swag), and just-for-fun races (costume races are especially appealing). The Army recently sponsored one in which racers (the soldiers) wore red stiletto heels to show solidarity and support for women victimized by domestic abuse. The fun is in digging up race lists and seeing what all is out there. I'm super jealous, because you're going to have a great time!

  • Do you want to run farther? If not, stick to 5ks! If you do want to build, go for a 10k!

Good luck tomorrow, have a great race!
