When you post on a topic, it "bumps" it back up to the top of the forum. People post "bump" so it will go back up to the top and the conversation will continue.0

Im glad you asked because I don't know either I have been trying to figure it out for a month now.0

No idea0

It means someone wants to be able to go back to the topic later (if you click on my topics you'll find the ones you've commented in)

Either the person "bumping" is trying to bump it to the top of the news feed so it gets more views & participation,
or the person is trying to bookmark it for themselves so they can check back on it later. If they put a comment, even if it's just "bump," it will show up in their profile.0 -
What a fabulous idea.0

When a thread gets a new reply it will be pushed back to the top of the index so it gets seen by more people. People will often use this to their advantage and make some pointless reply (often "bump") to push the thread back to the top. It's kind of rude in my opinion.0

If the question hasn't been properly answered, etc., it serves a purpose.0 -

Hmm, I never have bumped a topic to do such a thing. I bump it if i don't have time to read and/or comment at that time but want to find it easily in my topics. Frequently I will bump a recipe because I really don't need to say anything. I just want to find it again.
Sorry I have been rude to you without even knowing it.0 -
The question has already been answered, but I thought I would take this opportunity to point out the lovely MFP search function. A lot of topics similar to this have been posted numerous times before. Sometimes you can find the answer to questions by searching and you don't even have to post a new topic. It is pretty cool! :flowerforyou:0

It's not rude. It's part of message board etiquette..0

When I bump a topic it is not to be rude, ever... I usually just want to go back and read it later. I usually only do it when I don't have time enough to read it in the first place. I don't think people are being rude when they bump something. just sayin0

Guess I should have searched for it, I didn't realize you could as I don't usually do message boards or forum, I apologize.0

Don't apologize, it's perfectly ok.0 -

A lot of people don't realise the search function is even there! I think lor007 was just trying to point it out, not just for this, but to help you find all kinds of information on the site.
You don't have to apologise for anything.0 -

No need to apologize at all, a lot of newer people aren't familiar with search. I wasn't trying to be rude by pointing it out, simply helpful!0 -

Ok, I didn't realize folks around here were writing "bump" to use as a bookmark. They're misusing the word if that's the case. I was referring to people who constantly bump up their own threads to get attention when it's clear the thread isn't going anywhere, that's what annoys me. But there are perfectly legitimate reasons to bump a thread too, as jennajava pointed out.
You're not being rude at all by bookmarking it, I'm fine with that. Although, why not bookmark it using your browser instead?0
