Sometimes I have to remind myself in the morning when I realize I"m up 3 lbs or something ridiculous (due to water retention) that I know for a fact that I did not eat 10,500 extra calories the day before so i did not gain 3 lbs of fat over night.

If I stare at a box of cookies long enough, my body osmosis the calories and I'll wind up being 4 lbs heavier the next day.

You can "gain" a pound by drinking two 8-ounce glasses of water. As Alton Brown says, "a pint's a pound the world around."
