I am trying to eat better, but for some reason I keep going over my sodium. I just can't seem to find a balance. I keep thinking oh I can eat that, but when I put it in I am over.

I have 700 some calories left for the day and I even went ahead and entered in my dinner alreay. I have -819 in sodium. What the heck am I going to eat without all the sodium. I am not going to be able to eat 700 more calories and not eat sodium. Plus I am thinking of working out again and taht will add more calories. I am not going to be able to eat all of them.

I am just frustrated, thanks for listening.:flowerforyou:

You know, this might sound stupid, but I've never really taken sodium into consideration. I probably go over because I eat a lot of Lean Cuines and Smart Ones dinners. But in the past I have lost 100 pounds without thinking about sodium, so I know it can be done.

My only suggestion would be to not eat processed or frozen foods. It'll mean cooking it all from scratch yourself and not adding salt. (Such a pain, I know!) But that's most likely where all the sodium comes from...processed foods. :ohwell:

I used to be the same way until I realized how much sodium is in everything we eat. I look at the label of everything I buy, and if it's something that I have to have, I make sure to get the brand that has the least amount of sodium. Pre-processed stuff, like string cheese, for example, has a lot of sodium. Not to mention soups and broths! I stay away from those completely (I'm not talented enough to make my own soup). My suggestion would be to look at the foods you have that are over 200 mg of sodium and eliminate those (if possible).

Here are some. Essentially fresh food is far lower in sodium.

Things without sodium (or trace amounts) per serving:

    Spinach (22 mg)
    cucumber (0 mg)
    broccoli (23 mg)
kidney beans (fresh dried, not canned) (11 mg)
    mushrooms (0 mg)
    tomatoes (1 mg)
    romaine lettuce (1 mg)
    apples (1 mg)
    pears (1 mg)
    peaches (0 mg)
    bananas (1 mg)
    whole wheat pasta (5 mg)
    blueberries (1 mg)
    strawberries (1 mg)

things low in sodium (generally around 100 mg)
5 oz lean beef (89 mg)
5 oz chicken breast (104 mg)
    Atlantic Cod (111 mg)

so you could have a nice salad with oil and vinagar
mushrooms, romaine lettuce, cucumbers, carrots, broccoli, kidney beans, tomatoes, mushrooms and either some steak tips (broiled) for about 175 mg or with chicken for about 200 mg, and then have a nice fruit salad after. That should get you up to 700 calories nicely and still keep your sodium down.

I eat veggies, but I use the 100 calorie dips but thoughs are high in sodium. I just like to make things taste better.

I'm not sure what to say to that.

my sister got me into using cream cheese as a dipper. It's got more nutrition than other dips and it comes in loads of flavours. It still has sodium but it might be lower than what you're eating now. How about getting your veggies in a different form? I can't stand some of them raw! Cook them into an omelette, mix up a batch of homemade veggie soup, or whip up a stir fry.

You could make your own dip. I like light miracle whip mixed with paprika. You could also try plain yogurt as a base. Adding spices and herbs may help to reduce your need for salt to "make things taste better."

You could make guacamolie to dip your veggies in. All you need is avacadoes, lemon juice, garlic and, if you want to add it, rock salt.

Out of curiosity I just added the sodium collumn to my food diary and apparently I have only had 1g or mg ... whatever it's measured in today ... can that be correct?!?!

Wait, rock salt? Where are you from vonzo? LOL, in New England, rock salt is what we use on our sidewalk when it snows. Are you talking about sea salt?

Scotland! It comes in a tube called rock salt .. probably is sea salt. To be honest I've never really thought about it before

We call road salt grit ... and I know that that's some kind of food in the US ... how bizarre. I'll need to watch what I ask for when I come over on holiday

It could be that your food diary entries do not include information on sodium. Many members only record calories, fat, carbs and protein. And some just record calories!

LOL that's funny. yeah, they eat grits in the southern US (south east mostly). Yes, don't ask for rocksalt here for food! Oh man the stuff in the rocksalt bags is nasty (Dirty, brown and yellow nastyness). You really wouldn't want that on your food!
