Fruit & Weight Loss

I've been getting a lot of mixed reviews on the topic of fruit and weight loss.

Fruit and veggies often get grouped together and I've heard a lot of people say that you can eat as much fruit and veggies as you want, as long as you're watching your other food intake of course. I agree that you can eat as much veg as you want and still lose weight but I'm not sure if the same rule can be applied for fruit as well.

I've heard that you should limit your fruit intake when you're trying to lose weight because even though it's natural sugar it's still sugar and can interfere with your weight loss. I've also heard that you can eat some fruit (if you're active) but that you should limit comsumption to the morning and early afternoon meals.

I'm curious to hear what other people think and, more importantly, have experienced on their weight loss journey...

    I eat anywhere from 1-4 fruits a day and 1-2 veggies (servings) and have still lost weight!
  • I agree with you. With the program I'm on, I'm only allowed 2 servings of fruit a day, but unlimited veggies. Even though it's mostly water weight, the sugars in fruit definitely interfere!

    No one ever got fat eating things that grow on trees, bushes, and branches.

    Fruit has great nutrition plus fiber and can curb your craving for sweets. I seem to always mix mine with a type of protein which helps to keep me satisfied.
    Try limiting processed foods(white flour, sugar) instead.

    I've shed 125 pounds and I eat at least one medium-to-large banana and one large Granny Smith apple every day. I often have more than that, but those two things are definite staples.

    I also eat a lot of veggies - probably 4-5 servings most days.

    Count all the calories, fruits and veg, and that should tell all as far as overall weight loss goes.

    I'm not a doctor, nutritionist,, practitioner, etc, etc...

    Most vegetables are very low-calorie. Conversely, fruits have a significantly higher calorie count than vegetables. Fruits like bananas, mangoes, and pineapple especially are more calorie-dense than, say, melons or apples. It's not so much about the sugar than the fact that the sugar makes fruit more calorie-dense.

    I eat as many fruits, vegetables, meats, cheeses, yogurts, fishes, eggs, grains, pizzas, popcorn, ice cream, etc as I want so long as I stay close to my calorie goals and I lose weight. :-). And I eat my exercise calories (most of them anyway) so that means I get even more fruits, vegetables, meats, cheeses, yogurts, fishes, eggs, grains, pizzas, popcorn, ice cream, etc. LOL

    Bottom line is that as long as you watch your portions and account for the calories in the things you eat, there is a lot of flexibility for personal preferences.

    I think sugar itself isn't going to stop you from losing weight. People lose weight all the time and eat a ton of fruit. Personally, I limit it because I'm watching sugar and don't think that just because its natural I should be able to stuff my face with it. Your body doesn't know the difference between sugars and it all turns into the same stuff once its past your mouth. What I have noticed is that people who watch their sugar end up not only losing the weight, but have a leaner overall appearance and lose their "problem areas."
  • My food intake is mainly vegetables and fruit and I'm still losing weight. However, I eat more fruits that are water-based (such as melons, cantaloupes)
