Is it strange to bring your small food scale and measuring cups when going out to eat at the buffet? LOL

I ask because it is very easy to overdo it at the buffet and I want to measure accordingly.

It's strange, yeah, cause I'm sure you'd be the only one there doing it. But, do I think it's a bad idea? Absolutely not! lol

I think that would only work if you knew all of the ingredients in each of those dishes along with the calorie count and can measure what you eat. Otherwise, I say just go and enjoy yourself or skip going to a buffet all together.

I would avoid completely!!!! You won't even get your moneys worth :/ if you do that. The only way I would go is if there was a huge party going and I had no choice and in that case I think you should do whatever keeps you eating within your calories!! haha Some people might look but just smile confidently :D
  • what a great idea! :)

you obviously would take more initiative than me at a buffet (which is why i can't go there anymore!)

I don't think it's necessary to count every calorie in every meal. Sometimes it's ok to indulge. It's actually good to go over on calories, it prevents your metabolism from slowing down.

What she said. I have to avoid them.

Saw an article in my Sunday paper that might help. Picture in your mind:
a 3 oz serving of meat is about the size of a deck of cards
a large potato is about the size of a computer mouse
a bread roll is about the size of a cassette tape
1 teaspoon of butter or margarine is the size of a poker chip
a 1/2 cup serving of vegetables is about the size of a baseball.

I taped this to my fridge!

i think it's too much hassle. Just go and enjoy yourself! A day of being over calories is not a bad thing. I assume you don't go every day right? And for what it's worth I would personally think it's weird to see someone do that. But if you really want to, go ahead :)

Yup, that's a bit too strange, in my opinion. I'd suggest you use your fist as a measure (as portion of meat is the size of your fist). And choose your foods carefully. Start with plenty of veges and salad and lean protein (fish (not fried), turkey, chicken) then have a few little treats.

Also, use the smallest plate they have available.

    And drink lots of water.

And have a small healthy snack beforehand so you're not starving when you go.

You'll be fine if you're thoughtful in your choices and you don't make a habit of it. :)

    Good luck on your journey!

This must be a really old article. Cassette tape? What size is the mouse for it to be equivalent to a potato?? <--- really confused by that one. I don't remember mouse's being gigantic, but a computer once was, so I guess it could have been 3x's the size it is now ?

    wow-lol.

My mouse is about the size of what I'd consider a large potato - not a huge potato, but not a small one, either.
But who is more familiar with the volume of a poker chip than they are with a teaspoon? And why a cassette tape rather than something a similar shape to a dinner roll (maybe a peach)?

As long as I am not in line behind you!!
  • LOL! Thanks for the advice, everyone :)

Actually, today I went to Sweet Tomatoes, which is mainly a huge salad bar buffet, and they also have bread, pasta, soup, and desserts. Incidentally, I ended up forgetting my scale and ended up eating much less than I did when I was heavier. Soooo...I won't bother. :-)

I avoid the "bad" buffets...like Chinese buffets and Golden Corrals.
