Women don't naturally have enough testosterone to get "bulky" so lift away. If you find at some point that you are one of the genetic outliers that do start to put on bulk, then back off - but you're not going to do a set of bench presses and swell up like Popeye. I do arm exercises in the 40-50 pound range (total) and am looking to up to even more weight.

No, you won't bulk up. Don't even worry about it!

If looking for toning, do high reps and low weights. You still want it to be heavy enough where it feels like a workout though. If the 25 lbs is too easy you may not really be getting anything out of it. Do sets of 15 to 20

Exactly. Women do not have the testosterone to bulk up like a man. I have been lifting for a looong time and you can take a look at my pics, not even close to bulky :D

    No no no no no.
    Lift HEAVY with low reps.

You wont see any "tone" or definition util you lose a lot of the fat around the muscle

i just got finished reading this thread, lot of good advice from steve-o in here. You're not going to get big, chica... you're going to get lean. have at it, lift heavy, eat clean.

I agree with all the posters who say you won't bulk up by lifting weights.

However, you won't get the results you are looking for if you don't have the right dietary intake.

Keep lifting weights (and yes - heavy weight with lower reps is the way to go to build muscle), but also follow the calorie intake guidelines that MFP suggests, or do your own research and customize your own calorie goals (www.fat2fitradio.com also has some good calculators on their site to determine calorie targets for your weight loss goals).

    Good luck!
