I was reading a post and everyone was eating 100 or more grams of protein. Why do you do this? Is there science behind it? Does it deter hunger? Are you working our a lot? I am guessing you mean veggie protein, not animal protein? I have recently upped my protein with a Spiru-tein energy shake and the addition of Greek yogurt. What are you eating to get all that protein???

Thanks

My protein comes from the following sources usually:

    whey
    chicken
    tuna
    tilapia
    salmon
    steak
    ground beef
    sausage/pork
    eggs
    greek yogurt

I take in anywhere from 175 to 220ish per day on average.

When you are dieting you should eat around 1 gram of protein per lean body weight pound or .8 grams per pound of your weight. This is to prevent your body from consuming as much muscle as possible (you also need to do strength training for this). so it helps yoru weight loss be more fat and less muscle.

    Protein also helps muscle recovery

For me, protein is protein, but the majority comes from many of the things listed above.
Loads of chicken, Turkey, Eggs, Cheese, Fish etc.
I get around 120-165g per day.

For us building muscle and adding weight, the general rule is 1g of protein per lb of body weight.
  • I get at least 120g a day.
I do this to stay full longer, help protect my muscles as i lose weight, and becuase protein is yummy :D
    I get it from:
    Greek yogurt
    cottage cheese
whey protein shakes and casein shakes
    chicken
    beef
    pork
    tuna
    eggs
    cheese

    yum! :D

Protein does aid in helping you stay full longer.
  • I am the same too...

I am 240lbs at 5'9... at my height and weight, I should intake around 230

Gram per pound they say... but you also have to know that each unit of protein has calories, so you have to watch that.

I am a big boned guy with norweigen heritage... I can afford the protein. I'll become **** diesel if I continue my journey.

I aim for over 100 grams because I try to get about 1 gram per lean body weight, and that's around 100-105 for me. More if I exercise a lot.

I've never had a protein shake, but I do have some higher (10-15g protein) bars that I like. Tastes like a candy bar, but good for me? Yes, please. The rest is from... whatever else I eat. Chicken, fish, sometimes pork or beef. Beans. Rice, bread and pasta even have some protein. Milk. Sometimes yogurt. Eggs occasionally.

I had a slipped disk in my jaw years ago, and had a very hard time eating real food until that improved. Since I lived on shakes for a time then, the thought of having them again has no appeal. I enjoy eating food too much to drink it. Unless there's rum or tequila or vodka... then I will gladly drink my calories. :drinker:

As for the "why?" I tried it because people with amazing bodies suggest higher protein as a way to maintain lean muscle while losing weight, and I didn't want to be skinnyfat. I kept doing it because I loved the results. I had more energy and felt stronger, stayed full longer, was able to run faster and longer... there was absolutely no downside for me. Coupled with regular exercise, I love that I have muscle definition for the first time in my life. I've been thinner than I am now, but I never had abs before.

I do carb cycling where I have days that I eat very high protein and very low carbs. Protein is supposed to help you feel fuller longer. Also I change it up so my body doesnt get used to it any one way. I hate the super high protein days as I get sick of the same proteins over and over but it works!! At least for me!

Keep an open mind for when you hit a plateau cuz you might try changing your diet up to shake things up a bit!

My base goal is 90g, higher when I exercise. I started supplementing my diet with protein powder, but most of the time now I don't need it. I eat a lot of chicken and turkey breast, cheese, and milk.

Protein keeps me fuller a lot longer than carb-filled foods would.
  • bumpty bump. i need more protein sources!

Well, aren't you guys just a fountain of knowledge!!! Good job!

I did NOT expect all that animal protein (I have a sister who is vegan and her mantra runs in my head.) I had no idea about the 1 gram per pound baseline and I will shoot for that. I am at about 85 grams a day and have been feeling much fuller and making progress. I am right at then last 10 - 15 and we all know how hard that gets. I loved the remark about not being "skinny-fat." SO TRUE!!

    Thanks everyone!!

I wish I had known this when I did P90X. I do work out 6 days a week - strength and cardio. Love it! Thank you!!

I am a vegan and I am over 100g of protein a day most days - and have had some 150+ days recently. I have to do 2 shakes a day to hit that goal, but I am super happy that I am losing way more giggle per pound  Protein does make you feel full longer and I have to make myself meet my calorie goal. Once I have hit protein and fat, carbs aren't the siren song they used to be because I am SO FULL!

Chicken, eggs, tuna, and protein shakes. I aim for 200-220g of protein a day. People ask how can you always eat that? I tell them the same way people always eat fast food!
