Using ECG to get heart rate vs. chest strap

I have a Sportline HRM that uses ECG accurate heart rate readings (it's the same technology used for an electrocardiogram, measuring the electrical signals in your skin). What I want to know is, is this as accurate as a HRM that has a chest strap?
I'm very curious because I've never been able to get an accurate calorie burn and I'm afraid I'm either eating too much or not enough.
Thanks for any help/advice.
