Using ECG to get heart rate vs. chest strap

I have a Sportline HRM that uses ECG accurate heart rate readings (it's the same technology used for an electrocardiogram, measuring the electrical signals in your skin). What I want to know is, is this as accurate as a HRM that has a chest strap?
I'm very curious because I've never been able to get an accurate calorie burn and I'm afraid I'm either eating too much or not enough.
