I am making pinto beans for dinner tonight and am not sure how to add the nutritional info for the ham hock I put in there. I am only using it for flavor, not pulling the meat off of it to add in. I am sure some of the calories and fat will end up in the beans, but no idea how to count it!! Any ideas would be much appreciated!

Ahh, nope, I don't believe they will gain calories from it. Fat isn't water soluble. Now, the sodium, potassium, and some of the minerals that ARE water soluble, maybe. But not the calories or fat, not unless you are serving the broth as a soup or something.

  • Really? Wow, that puts it at only 100 calories per 1/2 cup! So, let's say I have the broth with them...then what am I looking at? Sorry for being a pain in the butt about it. I have to eat almost double my calories because of exercise today, so I am trying to bulk up wherever I can!

If you strain the broth to remove any fat, and it's truely just broth, then I don't THINK you add any, maybe a couple cuz some of the fat will get through the strainer. There's nothing in the broth but water, sodium, and some other minerals. I know that chicken broth is about 0 calories. The thing is, there's tons of sodium in broth, so be careful or you may end up bloated from it! You want good calories to go in it? Grab some whole wheat pasta, and a few of your favorite veggies, toss them in and simmer for 20 minute, it'll be all good!
  • Thanks for your input! I think I am going to treat myself to corn bread tonight to get in some more calories. Sorry... I'm a Southern girl at heart. Can't do pasta with it! I am definitely adding a side of veggies though! BTW, your education paid off!
