ok I had gastric bypass 2 weeks ago, and I'm supposed to be getting 60-80 grams of protein a day, but no one told me how much fat/carbs I should aim for. Giong to ask the nutritionist when I can, but in the meantime, anyone have an idea of what I should go for? right now I have 20g carbs and 10g fat per day as my goals, but I'm not sure. Thanks!

  • Call your doctor and ask him/her. You have to eat EXACTLY as instructed, especially in the beginning,. Don't follow anyone's advice but your physicians about this.

    How are you doing?
  • Did you get a food packet?
As far as I know It's not that important right now. Since your on liquids, I wouldn't worry about it. Are you doing the high protein shakes/meal replacement shakes that you doctor recommended?

You shouldn't even be worrying about that yet.. you can't even eat real food. I didn't look at calories for almost a year.

You should be concerned about the following:
Taking your vitamins --- GOOD ONES -- not crappy flintstones gummies
Getting your protein -- find a good protein shake that you can drink - whey protein isolate
MEASURE your meals --- learn to eat out of little 1/2 cup tupperware containers until you can move to 1cup
EAT slow, don't drink with your meals ....

Your fat limit will be based on how much you can handle....some people can't eat much and they dump. Same with sugar.

I was one of those lucky/unlucky ones -- nothing ever bothered me :)

Thanks :) (actually I had the sleeve so no dumping here). I have the packet from the nutritionist, but it still doesn't say anything about fat, etc. I just got moved to pureed foods so its more of an issue than just liquids.

I'm drinking syntrax nectar "shakes" (not really shakes they're the consistency of water) to make sure I get enough liquids and protein, taking bariatric advantage vitamins (they're gross but ya gotta do what ya gotta do!)

I know I can't do any grains or processed carbs, but they told me to add a small amount of veggies/fruits into my diet as well. And as for fat, most foods with protein have SOME, so I'm just looking for a general range. Gonna call the on-duty nutritionist tomorrow though :)

Thanks guys for the quick responses! I'm doing really well, moving and not in pain, healing well and doing pretty well with fluids and proteins. Haven't had too much nausea. Down 50+ lbs already (thats including the 2 week liquid diet before surgery). 50 lbs in a month! I never would have guessed it was possible, lol!

Sounds like you're doing very well... I don't know much about the sleeve so I don't want to make any assumptions.
I would definitely follow your doctors guidelines or do some googling of other clinics/patients. There are good resources on obesityhelp.com forums as well -- a whole section based on your type of surgery.

The most important thing you can do is commit yourself to changing your lifestyle and your habits.
Start getting exercise into your daily plan as soon as you're physically able. So many people just drop the weight and think its smooth sailing -- but it gets very hard! I am 3 years out now and I can eat just like any normal person and I have to work my *kitten* off at the gym not to gain and go backwards. Lots of googling, trial and error, re-learning how to cook and read labels...its hard work but you can do it!!!

PS If you don't like the bariatric advantage try Celebrate. I liked those much better.

Yeah, I'm on www.thinnertimes.com its all about WLS. I'm gonna try the celebrate vitamins as soon as I run out of these (they were expensive so might as well.)
The sleeve is pretty similar to the gastric bypass as far as results and dietary changes.

Gonna join the YMCA and get a routine started :)

You have the right attitude -- and the fact you're looking for help and answers is a huge bonus!
I hope you have fabulous success --- it really does change your life.

PS Call Celebrate and ask for samples -- they will send you everything and you can try it before you buy!
I love the calcium plus 500 cherry and the orange or pineapple multi -- and the grape iron.. and the orange chewable vitamin d, and the ens vitamin/protein chocolate mix...ok i just love their stuff.

    ditto this!!!

And...the "sleeve" is a a vertical sleeve gastrectomy. It's not a gastric bypass--nothing is bypassed or moved around, some people "dump" but it's not common and there is no malabsorption going on. It's actually a simple concept--about 85-90% of your stomach is removed completely--including the part that produces the hunger hormone, ghrellin. So, you eat less and have a natural appetite suppresant. That said, VSG folks still have to eat correctly and exercise like everyone else but the tiny stomach combined with the ghrellin factory being shut down is an awesome tool!
