Ideas to build weights collection

I run three times a week and waiting for our second hand rowing machine to be delivered, so hopefully do that couple times a week.
My husband and I also wanted to do some beginner weight related exercise. I borrowed one of the P90 DVD's off a friend (arms and shoulders) and we did enjoy it. But haven't got anywhere near the right amount of weights we need.
So we are looking for a way of cheaply building up a small home weights collection.
I have been looking on Ebay UK and the plastic sets look cheap and badly made, are they ? Or would these be alright for beginners.
Alternatively is there somewhere/some brand of weights which we could buy 2 at a time as we need them ?
We were hoping to get a set of P90 DVDs and do them at home twice a week. Or is there a better DVD for us to start with ?
I do have a kettlebell and a kettlebell dvd but husband is not interested in these he wants to use proper free weights.

hate to say it...but there's no cheap way to build a weight collection. everything we have we've accumulated after about 10 years! just gotta get out there and start buying i suppose! we needed dumbbells for the P90X and we looked all over for a cheap solution before deciding we just need to go out and buy a whole bunch. if they are gonna get put to use then it's not a waste of money. i can't wait to get my own house and my own gym...it's gonna be legit!0

Amazon and Argos sell weights cheaply, and it's amusing watching the poor delivery driver get them upstairs! Also try Gumtree where people sell all sorts of things they don't need - there's tons of sporting equipment and you're bound to find someone near you.0

Amazon, Argoes, Gumtree and be prepared to buy a few. Go it
What would you guys recommend weight size wise for me and my husband to start P90 or is it a personal thing ?0
