Most days I'm short on fat. As a rule our house is a pretty fat free zone. I'm wondering if I should worry about it. Heart Disease runs in my family so I take my Omegas and Fish Oil plus I try to add ground flax when possible. I know I could add more nut fat to the diet but right now I'm at 1200 calories and really don't want to give that many calories to one food. Does anyone else deal with this problem?

  • Im always under in my fats and the fats I do eat are always the good kind so I dont worry about it.. I figure if it was a big deal then you wouldn't hear so much negativity about fat. Either way Im getting my calories in and Im getting in shape and losing weight so I must be doing something right. I had a similar question when I started and it was suggested that I eat a snack with all natural salt free peanut butter, which I usually do once a day now on a plain rice cake and its been working really well plus it tastes great.

I'm always under on fat. I make sure I eat enough so that I'm not at like 5 grams or anything but I am under, too. Hmmm...

Try to make sure and not let your fats get TOO low. You do need a certain amount of fat in the day. If it is only under by a little, I wouldn't worry but if you are way under, it can be a problem.

Unfortunately, fat get's a bad reputation. We are called "fat" when we weigh too much but the fact is, fat isn't the culprit in gaining weight, it is eating too much of anything.

They are called "essential fatty acids" for a reason and are just as important to your health as anything else. Yes, focus on the good fats as much as possible to get the best benefits but don't skimp on the fat too much or you might start to see a negative change in your skin, hair, nails, etc.

I was going through that at first. Focusing on fat-free and low-fat as much as possible. And after awhile, I noticed my hair starting to thin. I was eating enough calories so wasn't sure what the issue was. I started reading about fats and realized the mistake I was making and slowly added some back. I would put a tbsp of sliced almonds in my oatmeal or make sure to use olive oil, etc. I also stopped being afraid of fat.

My hair has stopped thinning so much and is slowly growing back in thicker.

    Just be careful!!

Thanks for the link I will check it out. Luckily I have a physical coming up soon and I can talk to the doctor about it as well. I know I need to increase my HDL- My mother had a triple bypass a few years ago and she never had high cholesterol, wasn't a smoker and at most weighs 115lbs. I guess that is where some of fat fear comes from thinning hair sounds so much better than open heart surgery but there has to be a compromise somewhere right?

Do you log the omega pills you are taking in MFP? That will add to your daily fat intake.

Thanks my supplements will help narrow the gap. I also checked out the American Heart Association guidelines. I guess I'm just going to have to get used to a allocating 200-300 calories for some good fat.
