Hello MFP members,
Have any of you lost a signifigant amount of weight meaning 20 lbs or more and was able to keep it off? If so, here is a great way to give some of us the motivation we need. Please list any tips, tricks, facts or fads here for all to see. Thanks!:drinker: :drinker: :drinker: Sharing is caring. :flowerforyou:
Here, I'll start:
1. For those who hate drinking water there are Sugar Free mixes you add to your water bottle like hawaiian punch and pink lemonade that you can get for $1.00 a pack with 8 or 10 in a pack. No carbs and only 10 calories (Family Dollar). Also they taste like the real thing not like diet sodas and stuff.
2. If you are a Carb watcher like myself, pork skins are great. there are NO carbs for the entire bag.

water water and more water!!:drinker:
5-6 mini meals spread throughout your day will keep your blood sugars leveled (to reduce hunger etc.), keeps your metabolism pumped up as well!
Did I mention water? Plain ole tasty yummy ice cold old fashioned water is one of the healthies things for our body!:smooched:
Pre-planning meals can save you from freaking out in the the middle of the day when your'e to hungry to think straight, helps to keep your daily cals planned out so you know how many more to eat.
Don't restrict yourself to much! We do that and we set ourselves up for a failure/binge.:ohwell:
Planning treats is fine, sometimes when first looking to change our lifestyles from crap food to healthier some might need to keep away from the white stuff, sugars, flour etc. till they detox so to speak a bit, then introduce a healhier version of that favorite snack.
We are all so different in that some can continue eating what they used to and tone done the portions, others feel they have to stay away until they feel stronger, neither way is better than another.
Find what works for you, and stick with it!
EXCERCISE = cardio, strength training, mind & body classes, meditate or simply find a quiet place to think on the changes your mind and body are going through, I think this is something hugely importants sometimes we miss.
Water, water and more water!
Don't skip meals, you'll only find yourself moody, hungry and then comes the binge monster.
Eat to nourish your body, not live to eat. Food is fuel for our bodies.
Can't wait to see what others add.... we all have different methods that have worked for us...so it's great to share those.
Thanks for starting this thread renayeb:flowerforyou:

Oh, she nailed that one. I don't know how many days were ruined back when I first started because something was more conventient. Or ALWAYS keep some Nuts or Yogurt in the cupboard/fridge...It will kill hunger QUICK!0 -
I lost 23 pounds and have kept it off for about 5 years.
Viewing your lifestyle change as just that....instead of a "diet" that you come off of after you lose the weight. One of the best things I learned is portion control. I also learned to drink water! And learning to weigh myself to keep myself in check. Those three things helped me keep the weight off!0 -
I lost about 30 pounds 5 years ago that has stayed off by making lifestyle changes. Here are the ones that stick out in my mind:
Buy re-usable containers that are pre-portioned, i.e., 1/2 cup, 1 cup. When I buy a container of cottage cheese, I divide it into 1/2 cup containers. I can grab one and take it for lunch/snacks! Same for unsweetened applesauce, SF, FF pudding, salad dressing, etc. Basically use them to prepare ahead of time and you'll already have a portion size measured too!
Eat a fruit or veggie serving every time you eat - example, I typically eat 5 times a day (3 meals & 2 snacks) so that way I know I am getting at least my 5 a day.
As others said: Water! :drinker: I now carry a re-usable bottle (Nalgene) everywhere with me. I typically only drink water & milk. Oh and plain hot green tea in the mornings (not a coffee drinker). I have a diet soda about once a week.
Hmm what else...as FC also said, plan your meals ahead! In my mind it's just like planning ahead what you are going to do the next day - I am more accomplished if I know ahead of time what I am going to do. Same for what you eat! And track everything!
Exercise! Getting a dog really helped with that too - even on days I don't feel like going to the gym, I know that I'll at least get out for a walk because he needs it too! :flowerforyou:
Don't get down on yourself when you have a bad day. Learn from it and do better the next day!
Learn why you want to lose weight/be healthier. If you aren't doing it for yourself, chances are the weight won't stay off permanently.
Remember, it is a lifestyle change, not a diet! Whatever you do to lose weight/get healthier, remember that however you got there, you will probably need to continue it the rest of your life!
That said, don't deprive yourself, like FC said. Learn to have smaller portions, share with friends/family. Do we really need that big piece of cake, or will a small piece suffice?
Throw away (or donate) all your clothes that get too big!! I think that has helped me the most - once my current pants get tight (I gain in my hips first), I know I have to do something immediately about it because I refuse to buy new, bigger pants. I have plenty of photos to remind me how big I used to be, I don't need to save the pants!
Eat a balanced diet - usually if I have a craving, it's because I am lacking in some nutrient.
Fiber, fiber, fiber! Then, water, water, water! :drinker:0 -
Fitness Chick took all my good stuff. :grumble:

Oh, I remember one.
if you go out to eat, and the portions are large, IMMEDIATELY ask for a take out container and put some or half of your food in it, close it up, and put it out of sight (or ask the waiter to put it under a heat lamp or something). You won't miss it, and it saves you from killing your calories for the day.
also if you go out, request that they don't use oil for any vegetables, steam them if they can, but no butter, no oil. The waiters hate this one (hehe) because it means the sous chefs need to manually make your meal and they can't get the par-cooked stuff. Tough luck for them though.0 -

Oh I like this one. Unfortunately though here in the UK the waitress would probably just refuse your order :ohwell:
My biggest temptation is chocolate and crisps. So I have simply banned those from my flat. My boyfriend is now buying the bad sweet stuff for himself only and leaves it in the drawer in his office. At home we only have healthy treats left.
Baked crisps, low calorie popcorn, fruit juice ice lollies,...
I have also replaced my usual ready meal lunches with fresh salads. SO much healthier and my hunge ris just as satisfied.0 -

Hey Guyz,
What type of workouts do you do, how often, and for how long? I am currently on the treadmill and punching bag. I went out yesterday and bought my own gloves so I could quit using my husbands.
I would love to start doing floor exercises and I also have a stepper that I have not used yet. I do think the stepper may be really fun.
Also, do any of you know what some good workout tapes/ dvd's to work out with, for beginners of course?0 -
