10% loss and then maintain?

I was reading on WebMD about realistic ways of losing weight. Since August I have lost about 18-20 pounds depending on the day, and have plateaued for the past few weeks. I read that a healthy way to "reset" your natural weight point (which is higher after you gain weight) is to lose 10% of your body weight then maintain that for a few months before losing more. So for me, starting at 190, I'm down to 170-172 which is about 10%. I am thinking to make life easier for myself to maintain through the holidays (still exercising and eating better but more at maintenance), then back to it in January. Part of the reasoning for this, is faster weight loss actually messes with your insulin and ghrelin levels, which are hormones that affect weight. Also with each break of weight loss you "reset" your body to a new normal for yourself. Yes I'm a doctor, so kind of nerdy about this stuff, but also don't want to take the easy way out.
Anyone do this and have it work for them? Or did you lose everything all at once? How did you do?
General opinions are appreciated as well

I lost it all at once the 1st time around (I lost 50 pounds in a very unhealthy manor) and was able to keep it off for about 4 years, but as soon as I gave up the unhealthy practices, all the weight came back! SO this time I am doing it much more slowly.0

It sounds like a great idea, and it makes sense. I've always noticed that I have a weight I tend to gravitate back to VERY easily. I'm interested to see if others have tried this approach and what results they obtained.0
