Getting anxious!

I am leaving for NY on friday to vistit my mother inlaw for a week. Every time I go up there I gain like 5 lbs in a week! She prepares all our meals and they are NOT healthy. I do not know how to handle this at all. Almost every meal besides breakfast other family members come over so its not that she cooks just for us its a lot of people. She is all about the comfort food too! High carbs, low protein and no veggies. If this trip wasnt planned for the last yr I wouldnt go. I am scared I will screw my great eating and exercise plan up. UGH!

I have this same problem every time we go home and stay with my husband's parents. This is how I solved it. I go to the store and purchase my own food and put it in the frig (they have 2 so I put mine in the garage frig) I ask when they are preparing dinner and I go ahead and prepare mine first put it in the frig and heat it in the microwave. I have kindly let them know that I am on a strict caloric diet and must eat healthy at all times...no white flour, no sugar and lots of water. Everyone seems ok with it. We will see how Christmas goes this year.....I hope it helps you out:) Blessings0

maybe you could bring some salad material or when you get there go to the store and buy some veggies. load of on that and have smaller portions of the food your MIL cooks and you"ll both be happy!0

If it is a short period of time like no more than 2 days I would just make them happy and eat. If it is longer then eat smaller portions and act like you are enjoying the food so much and that you have eaten more than you actually have.0

^^^^ I agree with this! Smaller portions of the more fattening food, and perhaps prepare your own veggies/fruits to go along with it, so that you are filled up.0 -
I'm that mother-in-law! lol All I can say is portion control and try to fit some extra exercise in. I know people won't agree with me, but it's only a week out of your life and it seems to make your mother-in-law happy to cook for her family. You can only control you. Bring some healthy snacks with you and remember no one is going to notice if you don't demolish a whole plate of lasanga or whatever.
Good luck-
PS- I have the opposite....my size 8 mother is coming to visit this week and i'm just as anxious! :happy:0 -
sit down meals are horrid, but if you can opt to the outer ring seating you can serve yourself a plate and eat only what you allot and nobody's the wiser. also, stick to dish duty and that'll get you away from the table sooner. stay focused0

MY mother in law is like you but maybe a bit more demanding of our enjoyment. I think she thinks we should be on vacation when we go there, even from the diet. So I make her happy then work on loosing it after I get back.
Its just a week out of my life...0 -
