I get ONE free personal trainer consultation/ workout session as part of an employee wellness program, and would like suggestions on how to get the most out of my consultation. I don't know if I will pony up the $$ to continue past the initial consultation, but I'm willing to keep an open mind. Either way, I want to make the session as helpful and useful as possible.

If you're a personal trainer, what would you want to know about me that would BEST help you design a program for me that I wouldn't necessarily know to share with you?

And if you currently work with a personal trainer, what have you learned that might help a newbie on her first PT visit?

Just remember every PT is different!!!

I have had 3 PT's in the past 5 years from moving Gym's etc and they all have different advice of what to do but its all GOOD advice.

If I were you id ask what clients they have that have the same goals as you, did their clients achieve the goals. Let them know what you have tried before, what worked what didnt work and they should get a decent idea of what you need.

They will simply ask you what your goals are. Is it fat loss? Is it to increase your strength? Is it both? How much weight do you want to lose? How often do you plan to work out? They will use your answers to develop an exercise plan.

I have a personal trainer i use strictly for weight training. I made it clear to him that i dont want to pay him to watch me run, i run at home. Just being forward i said work my arms back shoulders tummy. Upper body. Small amount of legs. I told him past injuries and where i seem to struggle.

Try going from there. If you know that you arent good at a certain exercise ask him /her if there is something similar that you could try out. I have shoulder problems and doing alot of benching will dislocate my shoulder, so he gives me other exercises to do so i dont end up with the bar in my face =)

    Have fun with it!
  • Be clear with what you want them to do, do you want help with form/tecnique, do you want motivation??? Tell them your strengths and weaknesses and ask what they would advise. To be honest the answer really depends on what you are looking for? If it is a one off session are you wanting help on changing your workouts...new ideas?

The thing my trainer says to me is that if I want him to help me best, I need to just trust him and work the hardest I can!
