If I get the Garmin Forerunner 305, do I have to get the foot pod as well in order to track pace and distance? Also, can a Garmin HRM training device be reset to factory settings? i.e., if I buy a used Garmin 310XT or Forerunner 305, can I reset it so the previous owner's data won't show up and still be able to use it online for my data?

LOVE my Garmin....yes it can be "reset" and you won't need any kind of extras like the body bug does. The milage is tracked from satellite technology:) It comes with a heartrate monitor for better tracking of calories.0

You only need a footpod if you want it to work on treadmill.
I'd go with a 405/410 over a 305.
Wait, are you going to use it for multisport?0 -
I will use it for multisport only in triathlon races. I was looking at the 310XT for multisport but I think it'll be too expensive for Christmas this year so I'm looking at buying this for running and a separate, much cheaper cycling computer to watch my pace & distance there. The swim I don't care about anything except the time, so it's not worth paying another couple hundred for swim features, just water resistant and only during races.0

You don't need the footpod if your particular model is GPS enabled. Mine isn't, so I have to have the footpod if I want to know speed, cadence, mileage, etc... I have the FR60.
All history can be deleted and settings can be changed for you, and Garmins are pretty user friendly. I LOVE my Garmin! :happy:0 -

I'm confused by this statement...I rarely run on the treadmill and use my footpod every time I run. Do you mean it's only necessary if you want the device to pair with a treadmill? I don't have the speed/cadence sensor, but my Garmin still pairs with the spin bikes at the gym, so I'm confused as to why a footpod is necessary for a treadmill if a cadence sensor isn't necessary for a bike.0 -
The Garmin 305 is GPS enabled and doesn't need the footpod sensor unless you are running in a place where you can't get a GPS signal (indoors in many places) or where your physical position isn't actually changing (treadmill).
The footpod is useful for those situations and it can also act as a cadence sensor for either running or cycling.
I have the 310xt now and if you do triathlon it is just awesome.
Waterproof and 20 hours of battery life. Took me through Ironman no problems.0 -
BTW the 910 just got released so you should be able to get a 310 for a steal if you decide to go that route.0

i have the 205, very happy with it. the 305 gives you the heartrate monitor so if that isnt important then dont pay extra for it if you can still get the 205
with the newer models like the 405, what are you getting, what has been changed/improved? i cant imagine what they would change or improve to be honest except maybe have it find satelites quicker sometimes0 -

For multisport look around for a used 305. You can probably pick one up for about $80 bucks. Then get yourself the speed & cadence sensor and quick release kit off amazon. total of about $120. And you'll have the complete package with no need to go with 2 separate devices.
This is what I have and use for all my races. You can even baggy the 305 and put it in your swim cap if you so desire to track your swim as well.0 -

I had the 201, the 205 and now the 405. IMHO the form factor of the 405/410 and 610 is superior to the 205. It does a better job with the satellites for sure. That said, they all work fine.0 -

Are you sure, my footpod does not count cadence on a bicycle. It will count steps running outside or on a treadmill but not a bicycle. I am using an FR600 -

I have the FR60 and the footpod that came with it does not measure cadence on a bicycle. Are you making it work which would tell me I am doing something wrong with it?0
