...and the trainer says he wants to keep me on low weights high reps because he doesn't want me "to bulk up." I said I didn't think females bulked up that easily - he said no they don't.
WTF!! I have told him I want STRENGTH training for my legs especially to help prevent tendon damage in knees when I run (as advised by doc and physio). If he puts me on 30lb leg extensions he is going to get a dumbell around the ears!

I am not paying him - he comes free with the gym/pool membership.0 -
Sounds like you need a QUALIFIED trainer! Dump him cause women won't bulk up without taking testosterone.0

More often than not, you get what you pay for0 -

It all depends on what your aim is, to gain size or to stay lean. Of course, you are never going to bulk even with high weights since you are a female. But, you will get a leaner look if you do more reps. I would say do more reps, as I see more muscle definition in my arms and legs when I am doing more reps at a lighter weight. It all depends on your preference and your goals.0

I agree with a majority of the people who have already posted.
Your trainer is not an idiot most likely he is just telling you what he thinks you want to hear. I have a good friend who is a personal trainer and he told me the thing he hates most about the industry is that a lot of trainers just want your money and try and keep you as a client as long as they can. If you are considering getting a trainer I would defiantly shop around until you find someone who fits and someone who is training you with your goals in mind.0 -

LOL
Get advice on here re strength training and just do it. I don't see why people need a trainer/rep counter if they know the exercises they should be doing.
Except for absolute newbs, it is a great idea to get someone who knows what they're doing to check form. This guy/girl doesn't sound like the kind of knowledgeable person I would trust to check my form though.0
