...and the trainer says he wants to keep me on low weights high reps because he doesn't want me "to bulk up." I said I didn't think females bulked up that easily - he said no they don't.

WTF!! I have told him I want STRENGTH training for my legs especially to help prevent tendon damage in knees when I run (as advised by doc and physio). If he puts me on 30lb leg extensions he is going to get a dumbell around the ears!

I am not paying him - he comes free with the gym/pool membership.
  • Sounds like you need a QUALIFIED trainer! Dump him cause women won't bulk up without taking testosterone.

It all depends on what your aim is, to gain size or to stay lean. Of course, you are never going to bulk even with high weights since you are a female. But, you will get a leaner look if you do more reps. I would say do more reps, as I see more muscle definition in my arms and legs when I am doing more reps at a lighter weight. It all depends on your preference and your goals.

I agree with a majority of the people who have already posted.

Your trainer is not an idiot most likely he is just telling you what he thinks you want to hear. I have a good friend who is a personal trainer and he told me the thing he hates most about the industry is that a lot of trainers just want your money and try and keep you as a client as long as they can. If you are considering getting a trainer I would defiantly shop around until you find someone who fits and someone who is training you with your goals in mind.

    LOL

Get advice on here re strength training and just do it. I don't see why people need a trainer/rep counter if they know the exercises they should be doing.

Except for absolute newbs, it is a great idea to get someone who knows what they're doing to check form. This guy/girl doesn't sound like the kind of knowledgeable person I would trust to check my form though.
