Over the last week i have developed an insanely sore leg, the pain runs along the outside of the calf especially when i put pressure on it. It has got so bad it can't hold the weight of my leg. I went to the doctor and she said its probably just muscular and to ice it, but the ice makes it hurt more! It feels more like bone pain then muscular. Any ideas? I can't do any exercise without aggravating it, except bikram yoga but that is too expensive to do everyday. I have been exercising anyway, just trying hard not to use it too much but i just feel like i can't get a good enough cardio workout without my leg!

Sounds like a 2nd or 3rd degree strain which is an actual tear in the muscle itself. Unfortunately rest is required for healing.

What are the types of muscle strains?

Mild: This is also called a first-degree tear. It is a tear of a few muscle fibers with little swelling. You may have very little or no loss of muscle strength.

Moderate: This is a second-degree tear. There is more damage to your muscle and it is weaker than it was before the injury.

Severe: This is also called a third-degree tear. This tear goes along the whole length of the muscle, and you are unable to use the muscle at all. The muscle may not be able to contract or move.

Outside, on the extreme side? Or outside of the actual calf (back, outer calf)?

Rest and ice - you may have anterior shin splints, in any case you probably need rest. I am currently dealing with a shin splint and it sucks! I have been taking Aleve, resting and icing my leg. I also have used KT Tape which helps. Best of luck!
