So I get that you should eat back your exercise calories (I know not everyone agrees or does so....) but is it really healthy in any circumstance to eat over 3000 calories in one day?? I'm not sure I can do that without a binge to go along with it....and that is exactly what I am trying to avoid....advice?

3000 calories a day to eat seems like so much! I now I have probably had that in the past, but right now that seems like such a high number! I personally don't eat back my carbs that I burn off, but if I did, that seems just WAY to high.

If most of that is from exercise.. just try to eat healthy and stop when you are full but don't go over.. don't worry about the exact numbers so much.. Are you using a heart rate monitor while exercising?

Today I burned 1377 calories during my workout (verified by my heart rate monitor). I am allowed 1700cal/day, but allow myself to go as low as 1200 (the 1700 is a visual trick I play with myself...It will allow me a 1lb per week loss instead of the 2 lb loss at 1200. But if I see I can have more I tend to eat less and stick to 1200ish. If I see I can only have 1200 I tend to feel deprived and go over by a lot!!

So anyways....1700 plus the 1377 burned would be 3077 I am to eat for today....just seems ridiculous when I am fighting against myself NOT to have 3000 calorie days.... to do one on purpose.

You can if you want. When I was losing I was aiming for 1750 net calories. If I did a 2 hour mountain bike ride I'd easily burn 1200. I'd eat as much as it'd take to feel satisfied and yeah, sometimes that was 3000 calories, sometimes it wasn't.

Right now I'm trying to gain muscle and I net 2500 calories on average. I ate 4000 calories Monday.

The more weight you have to lose, bigger can be your deficit without having too much problems. Why not try with 2500 calories. Eat high calories food like full fat milk products, nuts, avocados, oils....ditch the low fat, low calorie stuff.

    Good luck

When I go backpacking, I usually eat over 3000 calories a day for the duration of the trip. I'm walking around 15 miles a day with a pack that weighs 35-45 lbs. I know I'm burning anywhere from 5000-7000 calories a day, depending on the terrain.

I usually continue to eat about 2700 calories a day for a few days even after the trip ends. I always lose a few pounds on a trip.

I am learning the pitfalls of fat free and low cal sugar free foods and am trying to move away from them...but it is a process. Thanks for that advice...I think it is a big part of my problem....

It can be healthy yes, especially if you earned it through exercise.

I'm eating to gain (muscle) at the moment and eat 2800 net, so apart from on my rest days, I'm always eating 3000+. I don't just eat unhealthy junk food to get it this high, I try to eat decent foods.

That's the key for me...when I eat that many calories it is usually junk and loaded with sodium....working on shifting the mindset. It's not just about the calories themselves...it's about the type of calories as well....

Barring eat disorders, I don't see any reason anyone should eat more than is necessary to feel full. If your body needs fuel it will tell you.

Agreed, but easier said than done when you still haven't mastered listening to your body's signals. I often eat for a multitude of other reasons besides hunger....it's a learning process for me...
