Blendtec vs. Vita-Mix: Which do you prefer?

I'm a smoothie junkie. I make them every day for breakfast, and I make a protein smoothie after every workout. I also use my blender to make smooth veggie soups I can drink while I'm on the run. Now that I'm considering it, I probably use my blender for a variety of reasons about 20-25 times a week. Long story short: I'm tired of wearing out cheap blenders that aren't up to the tasks, especially with regards to ice, and I'm ready to invest in a high-quality (and yeah, pricey) blender. Happily, Santa has offered to help me cover the costs. Yay, Santa!
I've narrowed down my choices to either the Blendtec or the Vita-Mix. By the looks of what I'm seeing online, quite a lot of people have the same debate when they're ready to make a purchase. To help me decide, I'd love to hear what you love, don't love, and maybe even the kinds of things you make with your Vita-Mix or your Blendtec,
Thanks, everyone!

I was trying to replace a cheapie that broke and found that the two you mention are probably 2 of the best. I saw some on Craigslist and they were still $200+.
I ended up getting anothere cheapie. but if this one breaks, I'll be there with you.0 -
I've never had a Vita-Mix but I love my Blendtec. I choose that one because it's a bit smaller and I liked the look better. I think you'll be good with whatever one you choose0

Love the Blendtec. It is digital so depending on what you are making you just hit the button and walk away while it runs through it's own program and varies RPM. It's also short enough to fit under your cabinets on the counter with the pitcher on which the Vitamix is not. If you are a Costco member, they do road shows at different Costco locations from time to time where you can save some money ($50 if I recall) and get your warranty extended to 7 years for free.0

We got a Vita-Mix and it works GREAT! I have heard good things about the Blendtec, but have no first hand experience with it. Our Vita-Mix does a great job making green smoothies, soups, sorbet (ice cream), etc. We have not had any problems with it, but have only had it for a few months. We bought it at a demonstration at Whole Foods for about $500. It is a monster and handles ice with no problem.
Good luck with whatever you choose.0 -
Thanks to everyone for your great response. I appreciate your input. I'm still not 100% decided, but I'm leaning toward the Blendtec right now. Thanks again!0

I've used both in a commercial environment. Blendtec hands down. VitaMix blow drive sockets like nothing. Blendtec are pretty much problem free during heavy retail use.0
