You + Gym = ? Calories burned

I'm just curious how many calories everyone tries to burn at the gym every day?
My goal has been 400 but usually I'm closer to 500. Is this too low? I'm set at a 1260 calorie/day (lose 1.5 lbs/week) diet and have been under my calories every day by at least 300. Thanks for any input!

500 calories burnt if you go to the gym every single day is great.0

Totally depends for me. I'm more of a classes person than gym floor so struggle to stick the floor long enough to burn enough calories before getting bored.
General term time schedule (I work in a boarding school so don't have much time)
Monday: 105 minutes of classes, approx 600 calories
Tuesday: 60 minute class and 10 minutes treadmill, approx 400 calories
Thursday: 165 minutes of classes, approx 850 calories
Saturday: 60 minutes-ish on the gym floor, approx 300 calories
Sunday: either 105 minutes of classes, approx 550 calories OR 60-ish minutes on gym floor and swimming, approx 450 calories0 -
Depends on what I do at the gym but I burn anywhere from 600 to 1100 calories and I go for 60-120 minutes.0

Definitely not too low.
Remember, MFP includes a built-in calorie deficit whether you exercise or not. If your setting is lose 1.5 lbs./week, MFP's calorie deficit is 750 per day. If you burn another 500 at the gym you're up to a deficit of 1,250 per day. Do you log your workouts in the Exercise tab? If you don't and you're under your goal by 300 calories then you're at a deficit of 1,550 calories per day. That's way too much.0 -
I usually burn between 400-600 calories a day. When I first started it was more like 200-300! Do what feels good to you - if you overdo it you'll get burned out and feel sick. As you lose weight and get in better shape just up the intensity little by little and you'll be burning tons of calories in no time0

I don't go to the gym every day, but when I do, I typically stay for 60-90 minutes, so I hope to leave with about 300-500 burned. The smaller you get, the lower your burn will be.
Please keep in mind that you already have a calorie deficit of 750 calories a day if you're aiming to lose 1.5 pounds a week, so there's no need (and it might be counterproductive) to leave 300 calories at the end of the day. That makes your deficit too large.
You're at the point now, with only 20 pounds to lose, that a 1# a week weight loss would probably be more beneficial for you.0 -
I have never thought about it, I go do what I want to do in the time alotted and log what the results are.0
-
Yes I do log my exercise. So I On the counter I'm 300 in the green at the end of the day. Does that make sense?0
-
I usually burn anywhere from 200-600 a time, and go 3-5 times a week.
I don't have a particular number in my head I want to burn (unless I've planned meals and need to burn a certain amount to be under, which isn't often)
It's more based on time, if I'm only there for 30-40 minutes, a short session for me, I'll want to burn around 300.
If I'm there more than an hour, I'd like to burn around 500.0 -
I also just started working out again. I would love to lose 20 pounds, then I'd be done. We're going to Hawaii in February so I'm working hard to make sure I do lose weight by then. Last week I only lost .25 lbs which shocked me. So this week I amped it up a little. If I'm starving or start to plateau, I'll definitely start to eat more.
Thanks for all the input. Such great responses!0 -
I am losing on average around 400- 1500 a day. It really depends on how tired I am and to how far I run.
I have also started doing a brisk walk around the block on my lunch break. I am trying to be more active in general. I think I would be burning more calories than I realise and I have lost almost 7 kgs so I am pretty happy.0 -
wait wait wait,
so basically my setting is at llose 1.5lbs a day right? So when im eating say 1600 cals a day and then going on a 10-20k run ( training for trail runs amongst other things, i weigh 99kgs @ 6'2 ) and eating a 100cal gel when im out there to keep the energy up i burn between 800-2000 calories. So if i did that, and still stayed at that 1600cal limit i really would be losing over 3000 cals because of that MFP buffer that automatically sets in when you set up you're profile?
someone help me out here i had no idea about this!0 -

Yes - MFP builds the deficit into your DIET so any exercise you do is extra deficit. You don't want to burn 2000 calories and not eat some of that back - its way too big of a deficit. So if you're set to 1.5lbs/week without doing ANY exercise MFP has already set you at a 750 calorie deficit per day.
Meaning you could be eating 1600 +750 = 2350 just to maintain your current weight.0 -

Wow. So no wonder i find it hard to lose the weight! because im losing WAY TO MUCH and my body thinkgs its starving. so really i should be eating the 1800 cals a day, maybe even 200 more to push it to 2000 and then doing a workout or going for a run which would burn 500-1000 and i'd still be under my target calorie count for the day wouldnt i? I am such an idiot, i actually thought that i had to EAT 1800 a day and THEN workout on top of that, but really MFP had already calculated it for me and i hadnt even realised. thats awesome.
EDIT - im not trying to drastically lose weight, maybe 3-5kgs would suffice to get me down around 95kgs.0 -
I dont go to the gym. but i try to burn 400-800 cals a day (5 times a week)0

Yes this is correct, you need to eat as many of the calories as possible that you burn. You dont want to be to far under though as you need to keep your metabolism running. I find that when I am not eating enough I do not lose weight and feel horrible! As long as you are eating healthy meals and maintaining your calorie intake and your exercise then you will be fine.0 -
I don't go for a specific caloric burn. I go for a certain workout and then record whatever calories I happen to burn. To me, exercise is more about personal goals of fitness and overall health, not about how many calories I can burn in X amount of time.
That said, I do anything from a quick two mile run to ARC trainer to longer (for now) runs of six miles. So depending entirely on the day I burn anywhere from 190-600.0 -
I only try to target how long I would work out. Maybe i should target of the calorie burned also.0
