We went to my husband's cousins house to get my truck fixed & his wife cooked us dinner & fixed my plate, probably out of habit, bc she fixes her kids plates, gave me one fried chicken strip, about a cup or so of mashed potatos (full of butter & 2% milk) & Birdeye garlic chicken which was full of veggies & very yummy. THis was the first someone has made us dinner & then fixed my plate for me, what is the polite thing to do when you have things like fried chicken, i havent had fried anything in a very long time, so i ate a few bites, yep it was as gross as i remember, gave it to my lil man. What would be the polite thing to do the next time i go to eat at someone elses house.

I usually speak up and say what I don't eat or that I'll fix my own plate when everyone else is done. I don't think anyone would be offended, we all have different tastes and you might not have been hungry. If i missed the window to say I'd do my own plate, I would just leave on my plate what I didn't want to eat or give it my husband/kid.

Sometimes people want to serve you as a way to bless you. However, I think a polite way to avoid this is to let them know that you are monitoring your calories (which is technically true, ) and ask if they wouldn't mind you making your own plate. Even if they've already made the plate without you knowing, you can still ask if it's okay to put something back before you start eating. You don't have to get into this long convo about your diet, just have a good balance of gratefulness for their kindness and firmness so that it's not up for debate.

    It's okay to SPEAK UP!

Suggestion for how to approach this nicely: "Wow! This looks so good and thanks for fixing me a plate. I'm working on becoming more fit and right now so I hope you don't mind, but I'm going to give this plate to one of the kids (or whoever) and fix my own plate so I can stay within my calories" OR, if there is nothing you should eat there, go ahead and lie..."I already ate, but thanks" or "I've got something I prepared at home, thanks anyhow"...whatever gets you through the moment.

Don't let anyone else make decisions for you as to what goes into your body.
