Restaurant rant!

I ate lunch at Mimi's Cafe today. I ordered the grilled veggie flatbread wrap off of the light and fit menu. Unfortunately they only list calorie content. It was 475, which was the lowest of the items offered so I got it. When I got home I looked up the nutrition info and the meal has 83 grams of carbs! How can a little plate of food have so many carbs? No, I'm not on Atkins but I try to keep my carbs under 100 grams a day and now I feel like I can't eat again today. At least I didn't eat all the bread. Also, the veggies do contribute to that number as well. But geesh, if they don't get you one way, they get you another! Ok, rant over.

most of the carbs are probably from the veggies..which are good carbs...but the flatbread was still probably 1/3 of the carbs..

That is a lot of carbs but you're probably still ok. There's still plenty of time left in the day so you'll probably burn up the majority of those carbs and at least it was veggies and not a big bowl of pasta :). If you're concerned about it try having a low carb dinner and/or doing a little excercise......

I can't go to Mimi's without getting corn chowder and a muffin! So yummy!

I just looked it up too. Yes, that is a lot of carbs, but... 18 grams of fiber is terrific! Those were quality carbs that you ate

I'd say the flatbread was the majority of the carbs. It's a very dense bread. Vegetables do have carbs, but not 60g worth.

Yeah, I'm not naive, lol. I know most of the carbs are from the bread, which is why I didn't eat it all, but enough because I was starving! Yes, low carb dinner for me and I am going out tonight and I know there's going to be cake and cookies and it's going to take all I have in me to resist. Thanks for all the reassurances!

  • Dr. Atkins is rolling over in his grave right now!
  • I took my lesson on "Flat Bread" when I learned that Subway's "Flat Bread: had more carbs and calories than their regular bread... now anything that says "Flat Bread" I am reminded that it is probably simply condensed carbs.

Agreed, along with the hummus. The veggies were probably around 15g, maybe. Their non fat Balsamic has 18g, so there is a lot of it.

I was worried about the balsamic because I know anything that's low fat or non fat has a lot of sugar. I honestly tried not to eat a lot of the greens that were covered in dressing. I would have preferred dressing on the side but my mom ordered for me while I was in the bathroom and I didn't think about it. Usually I don't even order bready items but I was so hungry and the thought of a big salad was not appealing to me. I'm trying not to freak out about it since it's just one meal on one day and overall my macros are pretty good. Oh and honestly there was so little hummus on there I doubt it contributed that much. I swear it was just a tiny smear.

Remember to SUBTRACT DIETARY FIBER from your TOTAL CARBS to get your TRUE CARB TOTAL. (My nutritionist told me to do this because dietary fiber is not absorbed - it passes right through your system.)

Note: I started watching my carbs to reverse my prediabetic condition (diagnosed three months ago).

Yup< I agreed to eat at Mimi's cafe with a friend and I went to the website before hand and with the limitations of my sodium, all I was able to order was two scrambled egg and a side of fruit.

Either way, we applaud your choice! You could have caved and went with a high fat, greasy meal!

Sort of, but that's not quite correct. Insoluble fiber isn't digested, soluble fiber IS digested. So just zeroing out all fiber isn't very accurate. The thing is, there's no actual way to tell how much fiber is passing through, and how much gets digested, so it's easier just to say it counts for zero.

Thanks! Actually high fat greasy meals are not my thing. I always try to order a healthy option, usually a salad. I have a lot of stomach/digestive issues so I have to stay away from high fat and greasy foods. I guess that's a good thing.
