Decided to expand my "greenhouse" indoors. I grow my own herbs and flowers year round and was thinking about adding in a couple of tomato plants and ?????

Anyone else do this? Any info about what else to grow would be helpful.

I'd think that tomatoes would need a lot of full sun and warm temps. if I were to want tomatoes inside, I'd get me some grow lights, winter time doesn't have enough sunlight, at least in my neck of the woods (Pacific NW). You could always try to start some lettuce and kale indoors.

spinach does well inside here, I've got a "window farm" set up with an aquarium style pump to cycle the water, I can pick what I need for a meal and leave the rest to grow.

I've not had great luck with tomatoes inside but I also don't have great isolation for rooms, when the door is open all the heat wants to go outside.. downside of open-concept. Glad I realized it before going too far in plans for my house. Can still keep the basics of open-concept but have zones that can be closed off stabilizing their temperature better.

My room is equipped with 5 grow lights, air conditioner and circulation fans. I am able to keep the room between 70 and 76 degrees. All enclosed. Never had kale but like the idea of fresh lettuce and spinach. Thanks!

i would love to grow green beans during the winter months! never thought of growing indoors. *duh moment*
  • I grow tomatoes inside a conservatory type thing, they are doing soooooooo well, it's only been 5 weeks and flowers are already appearing. I can't wait until they're ready, it's my first time growing anything!

It is coming into summer here though (yay)

Growing your own veges is an awesome project. We purchased a large tunnel house and are growing silverbeet, spinach, cabbages, cauliflower, Brussel sprouts, chillis, cucumber, gerkins, tomatoes, bok choy, brocoli, corgette, and a collection of herps. A fantastic web site is http://www.tuigarden.co.nz/
