Anti-Advice...

I wanna know: What is the WORST (or most ridiculous) nutrition or weight-loss advice you've ever received? I'll go first:
"Eat more calorie-dense foods because you'll have to eat less of it (more meat, eggs, etc., less vegetables) and supplement the lack of nutrients with vitamins between meals."
Okay, so I'll eat nothing but meat, eggs, full-fat milk, butter, pasta and ice cream from now on, and never touch another vegetable - and not only will I get a body like Catherine Zeta-Jones, I'll also never clog my arteries and have a massive heart-attack! *intense sarcasm*

My two favourites:
1. Don't eat after [insert time here]
2. Coffee dehydrates you0 -
If you tell yourself you're not hungry you wont eat as much....0
-
Actually caffinated drinks do dehydrate you.0
-
Only eat when you're hungry....well if I could actually tell when I was hungry (not bored/emotional/thirtsy/etc) and knew how to do all of that, I wouldn't be in the position I was now...........0
-
Eating fat will make you fat....0

I was told one time to ALWAYS opt for sugar free, fat free, diet options.
I disagree just because most of that stuff is so processed, unhealthy, and unsatisfying. Since it's so bad I usually end up eating more than I would if I would have just had the natural/normal alternative. Also, people need some sugar and fat (i.e. fruits and healthy fats). Needless to say, I passed on that advice.0 -

Actually caffinated drinks do dehydrate you.
A University of Conneticut review of 10 independent studies concluded: "Research has not confirmed that notion. Most studies have found that in moderate amounts, caffeine has only mild diuretic effects — much like water."
In moderate amounts, caffeine does not have any more of a dehydrating effect than water......And the Mayo Clinic published a paper that said: "Recent research shows that this is not true and that caffeine has a diuretic effect only if you consume large amounts of it — more than 500 to 600 milligrams (the equivalent of 5 to 7 cups of coffee) a day. Still, caffeinated drinks can make you jittery, sleepless or anxious."0 -

This definitely one!
Also... a pound of fat weighs more than a pound of muscle...
Several small meals a day will keep your metabolism going
Working out in the morning burns more calories...0 -

I agree!! I followed this type of diet for 2 years and gained weight, plus I was hungrier most of the time, causing me to overeat.0 -

I actually like that caffeine is a bit of a diuretic, it gets my digestion going in the morning. I usually need a little boost due to my IBS.0 -
Atkins. Enough said.
Best advice: eat green stuff, and lots of it, and eat everything else in moderation.0 -
My housemate tried to tell me that exercise lowers your immune system. When I told her that wasn't true and that it's only overly excessive exercise that does that, and told her that I looked it up, she tried to blame it on someone else for giving her that information0

Eating fat will make you fat....
This. And "stop eating carbs and you'll lose weight"
Sorry I love my carbs and will not stop eating them - but I try to go for more healthy carbs (from wheat or whole grain) and I still manage to lose weight0 -
Worst advice: Cutting fat will help you lose weight.
What a joke! I enjoy my healthy fats0 -
I've been quite lucky! I havent really had any of that! But I havent really asked for advice much!! And yes! Caffine does dehydrate you! Not an issue if you are drinking your water though!! It's all to do with osmosis!! Coffee is a bit of a laxative as well though so that can be a good thing!! Lo!0

Yeah, so what is the logic about breakfast and metabolism? I don't get it. If it did, wouldn't the effect be too miniscule to care about?0 -
You will burn 1,000 calories doing 1 hour of hot yoga!! :noway:0

I have never heard anyone claim a pound of anything weighs more than a pound of anything else. People DO say muscle weighs more than fat. Your person got it all kinds of wrong, didn't they? :laugh:0 -

"Weight lifting makes you gain weight. If you want to lose weight, you gotta do LOTS of cardio."
Yeah, right.0 -

I didn't say it was unhealthy to eat breakfast. By the same token however, it's not unhealthy NOT to eat breakfast. And eating breakfast doesn't kickstart your metabolism or any such nonsense. It's one of those things that people should decide according to their preferences.0
