How to Run?!

Okay - I need help. My son has Cystic Fibrosis and we do a Great Strides walk every year to support the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. I am a team leader and trying to make it bigger and better in 2012. I would like to incorporate running into the festivities this year, but I CAN'T RUN! I am bigger busted and things don't seem to "move" the way they should. My knees hurt and the fronts of my shins absolutely kill me and I fell like I have cement blocks on my feet. Any suggestions? I would like to be able to run 5K by May 2012, but I don't know where to start! Help!

Couch to 5K! Check out the support group here on MFP: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/groups/home/30-couch-to-5k-running-program-c25k It's public, and no need for an invitation to join.
The program has helped scores of people, including myself, ease themselves into running. You can do the program at your own pace. Check out the threads in the group, including the basics of the program and lots of tips from other program participants.
You can do it! :drinker:0 -
Couch to 5 K program. Also it will hurt starting out as your muscles are not used to being used in that way. Obviously do not push it, but know there will be soreness. Also, get proper running shoes from a knowledgable running store- one that will take into consideration your gate, how you run, and recommend the proper shoe for you. Great shoes, mean less injuries to yourself. Start slow, and work your way up. You can do it!0

Hi I only started running a little over a year ago, it was a drastic change from the a 20 a day smoker I was. Take it one step at a time run a bit walk a bit you'll be amazed how quickly you get into it and start to improve. Oh and invest in a very good sports bra, I may not have a very big bust but any jiggling is uncomfortable. They can be a bit pricey but they are well worth it. A decent pair of cushioned trainers should also help with knee and shin pain, don't get to wrapped up in brands or cost in this department just get ones designed for road or trail running depending on what you do. I also have an aim for may 2012 Edinburgh marathon never thought I would be considering running 1k never mind 26.2 mile. Keep us posted on how you get on. Have fun YOU CAN DO IT x0

i am also very big breasted and i have asthma but now i love running! i wear a normal bra with a sports bra on top of that with some nice comfortabe shoes(stay away from shape-ups) and i have an app on my phone called runkeeper and its kind of like myfitnesspal in the sense that theres an app and a website but it tells you how far you run and how many calories you burned and things like that.
start by walking one week then build to a jog then next week and then make your way to running
but dont push your limits because you could hurt yourself and just start slow and build up
GOOD LUCK(: running is so fun and i used to hate it9 i would make excuse telling people im allergic to running)0 -
C25K. C25K. C25K!!
No one jumps out and runs (well, almost no one). Even in great cardiovascular shape, you still have to build up to really running. The C25K kept me in line-- I followed the rules, without jumping ahead, and taking breaks when needed, and it's SO much better on my knees, back, and feet than my tries in the past where I jumped ahead.
I DL'd an app to my Droid, a voice tells me when to run, and when to walk again. It breaks right into my music to do so. Makes it really easy!
As far as support goes, I've tried it all, and my preferred method is a regular underwire bra under a supportive sports bra. If I wear just one sports bra, they move in unison, but if I wear the above, they are held in place better. Some people swear by the $100+ sports bras, but my way works best on my chest.
Best of luck, you can do it!0
