Staying on track when eating with friends!

Ok, so I'm on a lowish carb/cal plan at the minute and generaly things are going ok. But am really struggling with eating with friends. For example this evening my flatmate cooked dinner for me, lovely though and was a surprise o work into the flat and have dinner waiting but it was quite a carby meal! Pasta bake! Couldn't say no but didn't want to eat much without offendng her. Not really sure how to cope with such situations and just wondered if anyone else has had the same. All I could think was "extra trip to the gym this week!!!!". Would love how people address this sort of thing without declaring they're trying to lose weight.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Eat beforehand and have a small portion of whatever they're serving. You don't have to stuff yourself to avoid being rude! Everything in moderation0

You have a flatmate - but you don't discuss with her things like your eating regime, or your intention to lose weight?0

Just eat smaller portions - drink water before and during...0

I also find this one of the harder things to do. However I think this is where the 80/20 rule comes in. If you eat well 80% of the time and try to moderate the damage the rest of the 20%, you will not be set back too much. Enjoy the treat. Taste every bite by eating slowly and concetrate on it. Stop when satisfied. And thank your flat mate for making such a great meal!0

I had this same problem yesterday, I was invited over relatives for supper and they had spaghetti and meatballs with wine and four different desserts. Of course I ate way more than I had planned.0

Tell them!
And maybe even get them on the bandwagon with you!0 -
I run into this with my allergy and that I choose to not eat beef or pork, and it has come down to "I'm sorry if I offend, but I can't/don't/won't eat it." And I don't. It was frustrating at first for everyone. But now we all have a clear understanding and I know to bring my own food, or be prepared to ask the server LOTS of questions and all else fails talk to the chef.
It's not about being rude, it's about your body and what you choose to put into it. I'm sure your flatmate will understand your new eating habits. :-)

I guess I'm pretty lucky in that a few of my friends are trying to lose weight too. If I go out to eat with them it's easy, b/c they actually encourage me to order sandwiches w/o the bun, salads, and other healthier options just by doing it themselves.
And my friends that cook for me are all aware I am trying so they make modifications in the recipe. I don't expect them to do this, they are just really conscious of the new health conscious me that they omit all the extra sour cream, cheese or whatever else they would normally mix into a recipe and have it on the side instead.
Maybe you could make your flatmate conscious and she can accommodate you a little better - that's what friends are for, right? Also, don't feel obligated to eat everything she makes.0 -

I agree. I'm a firm believer in eating what you want in small portions.0 -
drink lots of water with your meal. I do better when eating with friends. Especially those I've told about my weight loss attempt.0
