Break it down so it doesn't seem so overwhelming. You didn't say how much you want/need to lose, but let's say it is 20 pounds. So set your goal for 5 pounds. When you reach that, make it 5 more and so on.

There are several calculators with BMI (metabolic rates, etc), weight charts for your height and so on.

Are those charts right? Like, are they accurate. I weigh 276 pounds, so I don't know.

See how you feel as you go. It's not about a number, it's about your health! If you find that you're feeling great at a certain weight, stick with it :D Don't set a specific number goal, rather, listen to your body! :D

Go to the Tools tab and choose BMI. Calculate your BMI and it will give you a healthy weight range for your height. Choose a number in that range, and then as you get close to it, you can reevaluate whether it needs to be adjusted higher or lower. 150 seems to be a good middle ground for most people, so that's what I chose just to get me started.
In the meantime, focus on smaller, attainable goals for shorter periods of time - for example, 10 pounds a month, or 250 by Valentine's Day. It's a great feeling when you meet those goals.

I agree that health is the most important factor here. But since you asked for a number: According to the BMI calculator I like to use (National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute) 160 lbs will get you to a "normal" BMI. From there you can go down to about 125 before you're "underweight" but I wouldn't suggest aiming that low. Ideally, you'll also put on some muscle and something that low wouldn't be very healthy, imo. Someone here suggested 150 and that sounds good.

Like auntie also said, the best way to keep motivated is to break that down into smaller goals. If you break things down (and decide on a reward wink wink) it's easier to stick with it. But don't do food rewards, that's counter-productive! I've seen people on here reward themselves with clothes, shoes, new workout outfits, or gear. I personally plan to get my hair done at a salon (love the boyfriend but he isn't the best at dye jobs lol.) But just reaching a goal is so satisfying in itself.

In all, good luck and happy to see you on MFP!
  • i say keep going until you like what you see in the mirror.. the scale should only be used as a reference since everyone's body composition is different
