Vegan?!?!?

I have just found that my 7week old daughter has a lactose intolerance, and as she is a breastfed boobie monster, I have had to cut dairy from my diet! Looks like it will be this was for the next few months at least! does anyone have any healthy, nutritious yet super tasty snacks or meal ideas?
As this isn't a choice exactly I have never thought about it before and thus haven't a soddin' clue where to start!
Thanks!!

You can replace the butter with olive oil or skip entirely.0 -
Check out Alicia Silverstone's The Kind Diet, she has some great recipes in there. I also like The Post Punk Kitchen website, and a variety of vegan blogs. What I do, is use the recipes I find there and make them my own. ONe of the websites, if I remember which one, has a great substitution guide for making things dairy-free, wheat-free, so on. Good luck!0

That looks divine! I just have to try to remember not to consume a whole loaf with it! Mmmm0

We have many vegan groups that would probably be very helpful, too.

Thanks Hun! The one thing I find is that everything has egg or egg powder! What on earth is the vegan replacement for egg powder?! :-s0 -
I'm guessing you can still have eggs so you don't have to go vegan. My sister is a vegetarian and here are some of her suggestions.
As with all cookbooks, it depends on what you're in the mood for.
M's all time favorite, a lot of good staples

not a book, but my most favorite site for Indian cooking. Watch her videos and you know she's legit. I can't recommend this website enough.

Mediterranian cookbook, more summer style food though

These girls do a series, I like their stuff a lot.

Another desert based series of cookbooks.

My friend has been NON STOP nursing for 12 years...she is now nursing a newborn, a two year old and a three year old (he's pretty much just after naps or boo boo's) Her children are actually allergic to milk and it's proteins, not just lactose intolerant. She gets raw goat milk delivered to her house but she also makes some wonderful vegan desserts. See if you like goat milk/ cheese etc, since people are generally not allergic or goat milk lactose intolerant due to the size of the mammary glands of the goat versus the cow. whether it's the protein or lactose intolerance, eggs should still be OK therefore, you don't have to go vegan, which can be tricky when nursing as the baby's brain needs all the good fat and protein it can get. hope I helped a little0

We aren't sure yet if the proteins in eggs affect her as well, with my aunt and brother they can't have eggs at all, as she is so little it's just a process of elimination which will take time but she seems happier so it's very worth it!
Thank you for the links though! :-)0 -
What on earth is the vegan replacement for egg powder?! :-s

Just a heads up, a baby who is lactose intolerant would have galactosemia, which is a rare & generally life-threatening condition. As breast milk is full of lactose, you probably mean that she's got a milk protein allergy. I only mention this as it's two entirely different issues, and I just wanted to ensure you're checking labels for the correct items. :flowerforyou:
That said, if you currently eat other animal products, you certainly don't have to go vegan if you don't want to - simply cut out the offending food(s). Good luck, I've known several mamas with babes sensitive or allergic to various things and it seems like a bit of a tough road for the first bit while it's all sorted out.0
